1. PRESS RELEASE
JANUARY 16, 2009
ATHENS, GREECE
THE WORLD'S MOST IMPORTANT NEW CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE FROM
THIRTY-EIGHT NATIONS OPENS AT CONTEMPORARY SPACE ATHENS
The world’s foremost architectural solutions for the designs of new skyscrapers, corporate buildings, cultural
institutions, arts facilities, bridges, memorials, high-tech headquarters, sacred spaces, airports, private homes,
industrial structures, and urban planning projects from Paris to Hong Kong opens at Contemporary Space
Athens on February 19, 2009.
Contemporary Space Athens, located at 46-48 Megalou Vassiliou in the center of the Greek Capital, is a bold,
new experimental platform organized by The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies
and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design to bring state-of-the-art architecture, design,
and art to a European public audience through exhibitions, lectures, symposia, award programs, and events.
quot;New World Architecture, quot; which continues through April 19, features one hundred and fourteen (114) new
distinguished buildings and urban schemes selected in last year’s prestigious International Architecture
Awards® program for 2008. The International Architecture Awards is the only global Awards Program in
architecture of its kind, which was conceived and presented by The Chicago Athenaeum and in partnership
with The European Center to give an important overview of current design and architecture on a world scale.
The Awards Program draws important public and professional focus for the celebration and recognition of
the most important key buildings produced in this decade, underscoring the highest level of imagination and
inspiration of the “best of the best” architectural minds practicing design today. The awarded projects challenge
new approaches to design that are beyond the envelope of the everyday, while providing cities with key civic
buildings that celebrate and harmonize architecture as a high art while finding answers to the complicated
problems of environment, social context, improving quality of life, identity, and sustainability.

2. The current exhibition opening in Athens features the latest new buidings by the world's most prestigioius
architecture offices from 34 nations: Austria, Australia, Azberbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Burkino Faso, Canada, China,
Columbia, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Egypt, Italy, Iceland, Iran, Ireland,
Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland, Portual, Qatar, Singapore,
Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, and United Emerites, Vietnam, and The United States.
Out of the one hundred and fourteen (114) projects selected for awards and exhibition, Great Britain received the
highest number of fourteen (14) awards followed by China and The United States with ten (10) and with Germany
having eight (8) awards. The Netherlands was awarded with six (6) distinguished awards. Both Canada, Japan,
and Mexico won five (5) awards and Austria, France, Portugal with four (4) awards each.
quot; The International Architecture Awards, quot; states Ioannis Karalias, Chairman, The European Centre for Architecture
Art Design and Urban Studies and Director of Contemporary Space Athens, quot;are the most prestigious international
architecture awards in the world. It is the premier venue for innovative and excellent design; works by world class
architects share the same platform with the relatively unknown, resulting in a comprehensive and global review of
contemporary architecture theory and practice.”
The French firm of Christian de Portzamparc won three (3) awards for new buildings in Brazil, Luxembourg, and
The Netherlands and the British firm of Foster + Partners received four (4) awards for projects in Germany, France,
and the United States while the New York, Chicago, London, and San Francisco offices of Skidmore, Owings &
Merrill won a total of nine (9) awards for towers, planning projects, and masterplans in Egypt, China, Austria,
Kuwait, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, and the USA.
One of the boldest and largest projects awarded in 2008 is Christian de Portzamparc's Cidade da Musica in Rio de
Janerio—an absolute masterpiece of poetry and materials and an overwhelming scale that will bring an instant
landmark to this Brazilian city. Equally poetic is the Poster + Partners' Millau Viaduct—a mesmerizing marriage
of advanced engineering and striking architectural design. Staggering and expressive are the words for the CCTV
Television Headquarters in Beijing by Rem Koolhaus and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Koolhaus'
design will be, for certain, one of this Century's most notable hallmarks in the history of art and architecture.
Some of the most dazzling achievements are commissions built for public and civic architecture. The Civil Justice
Centre in Manchester by Denton Corker Marshall is a beautifully executed response to a complex program that
makes a striking contribution to the regeneration of this British city. Likewise the Antwerp Law Courts by Rogers
Stirk Harbour + Partners with it's stunning sail-like timber roof. Henning Larson's

3. calm Reykjavik, but nonetheless takes its influence from the dramatic Icelandic landscape and the ever changing
colors—from a indigo blue to a fiery red. David Chipperfield's Museum of Modern Literature, a building in
Marbach am Necker, Germany, combines modernism and .monumental Icelandic National Concert and Conference
Center is bold and geometric as it stands in more classicism with reductive clarity, embodied in materials that give
architectural language a calm, sensual yet highly physical presence.
The latest, towering skyscraper designs include Edificio Caja Sol in Seville, Spain by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects,
which rises like a majestic giant cylinder with grace, harmony, and tremendous proportional clarity. Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill's Tyrol Tower in Wörgl, Austria mirrors the surrounding Alps with great harmony and force in
an abstraction of building and landscape while the firm's Infinity Tower twists as it soars in Dubai, United Arab
Emirates. Norman Foster's Hearst Headquarters in New York combines an old tower base with an new tower to
form a powerful reinterpreted aesthetic. Foster's New York building is one of the first, most cohesive Green towers
in the USA. Hotel Crescent in Baku, Azerbaijan by Heerim Architects and Planners Co., Ltd. of Korea features a
highly abstract cresent moon tower incorporated into the overall hotel scheme and parti. Adia Headquarters in Abu
Dhabi by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (International) PA folds, twists in a way that makes the skyscraper seem
like flexible, bendable materials. Wageningen University and Research Centre, Atlas Building in Wageningen, The
Netherlands by Rafael Vignoly Architects PC., features a gridded structure over the building as a poetic gesture to the
landscape and to the otherwise simple geometry of the building it conceals. Top Code in Imola, Italy by Cristofani &
Lelli Architects is a highly intellectualized play of building skin and window fenestration as the tower leaps skyward.
Scala Tower in Copenhagen by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group is another contorted abstraction for the new urban edifice.
A new form and residential thinking comprises the exhibited private homes and multi-family buildings in the
exhibition. Reflection of Mineral in Tokyo, Japan by Atelier Tekuto Co takes the form of a severe geometric and
faceted form much like a crystalized rock. Lighthouse in Watford, Great Britain by Sheppard Robson features a large
curved shape that gives volume to the house while provides shelter as a roof. Hidden House in Klodzko, Lower
Silesia, Poland by KWK Romes Architects is the extreme of geometry and minimalism. Guna Villa in Jurmala,
Latvia by gmp-von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects takes a cubist form in deliniating living spaces. House
in Martinhal, Marthinal, Algrave, Portugal by ARX Portugal Architectos, Ida. carries the same severe geometry but
elongated. Casa No Geres in Porto, Portugal by Carcia Correia Lda. cantilevers over a ravine with brute force and
utmost elegance.
A high urban aesthetic marks the Old and New Harbour Bremerhaven in Bremerhaven, Germany by Latz + Partners,
where sympathetic historic preservation and new construction blend into a harmonized urbanism of

4. the highest architectural quality and standard. Haus im Haus Der Handelskrammer in Hamburg, Germany by
Behnisch Architekten is another significant example where renovation and preservation are combined to create
a contemporary environment sensitive to history and a profound respect for the landmark building. Samir
Kassir Square in Beruit, Lebanon by Vladimir Djurovic Landscape Architects reinterprets and reconstructs this
historic square using refined, contemporary materials and planning techniques that welcome and embrace the
public while honoring the past.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's master plan for Alexandria, Egypt is one of the largest projects awarded in 2008
and in the exhibition that demonstrates that the best architectural plans and intentions can transform the lives
of millions.
quot;New World Architecturequot; is curated by the Finnish Architecture Jouralist and Critic, Christian K. Narkiewicz-
Laine, Museum President of The Chicago Athenaeum. The exhibition is organized by Lary L. Sommers,
Director of Administration, The Chicago Athenaeum and Kieran Conlon, Director/COO, The European Centre
in Dublin, Ireland.
The new Contemporary Space Athens is centered in Rouf—the fashionable redevelopment area in central
Athens—a former, run-down industrial neighborhood that is now being transformed into a new cultural area
with the opening of museums and cultural institutions, galleries, restaurants, night clubs, apartment towers,
and studio spaces for young city artists. Greece’s innovative Athens School for the Arts is located nearby and
the site has already been pioneered with the opening of a new annex for the Benaki Museum converted from an
old Rouf factory building.
In addition to the renovation of the buildings into open galleries and Museum offices and workspaces, and
a GOOD DESIGN Cafe, plans for the new centre also include a public outdoor sculpture area dedicated to
experimental new works, performance spaces, and innovative media that will visually enhance the area and
bring a new urban life and cultural vitality to Rouf.
“In my opinion, a new cultural space, dedicated to contemporary ideas that is innovative and experimental,
would be welcomed in the City of Athens,” states Christophe Farnaud, Ambassador of France. “The European
Centre’s new facilities can have a profound impact on local Athenians and international tourists that come
to Greece with its unique public education outreach and educational mission. The Embassyof France is very
happy to cooperate with The European Centre on developing new cultural programs and exhibitions and on
future educational partnerships.quot;
In Greece, the new Contemporary Space Athens is headed by the Greek architect, Ioannis Karalias,

5. Museum Vice President, The Chicago Athenaeum, and Chairman, The European Centre. Mr. Karalias has been
Museum Vice President of The Chicago Athenaeum since 1988 and has relocated to Athens to guide operations
in both Greece and Ireland and to direct the institution’s programming worldwide from a European base. The
European Centre is headquartered in Dubin, Ireland with an office in the United States.
“We are very pleased to develop this new museum space in the center of Athens,” states Mr. Karalias.quot; We
plan to contribute significantly into the cultural life of Athens and Europe as a whole. The total program for
Contemporary Space Athens represents a considerable cultural investment by our institution inside the European
Union to bring to our European audience the best new public education programs on the themes of modern
art and modern design and as a way to serve our institution’s ever-growing audience of European architects,
designers, artists, developers, professionals in real-estate and business, corporate executives, manufacturers and
general public.”
