Waynesburg College was involved during the civil war before becoming a university. The college has connections to The Underground Railroad, two soldiers from the college and a college student interjecting in an altercation between a freeman and slave owner to protect the hidden slaves. A.B Miller, President of the College in the 1850s, wrote in his Journal, as an abolitionist, his thoughts about slavery and voting against it. During the Civil war, both James Jackson Purman and James Milton Pipes fought together. They were not brothers but fought together like brothers. They won the Medal of Honor for their heroism and valor during the battle of Gettysburg. Both were shot in the leg during their heroism. After the war they got married, taken on new vocations and settled down. Waynesburg College may allegedly have been directly connected to the Underground Railroad. Luther McCraken, a former college student, had interjected during an altercation between slave owner Mr. Ross and freeman Ermin Cain, in order to protect the hidden slaves. Overall, Waynesburg University has a history and one that is crucial and vital to understanding how this institution was established and what it had gone through to grow to what it is today.
