Use of wish with past tense By Profr. José Ma. Jaramillo S. September, 2008 I wish I had my own apartment!
Most common wishes people have: win the lottery buy a house near the beach meet their favorite actor have a lot of money have a sport car finish a career have a big house don’t work travel around the world
The verb wish The verb wish is followed by an 'unreal' past tense when we want to talk about situations in the present that we are not happy about and we can not change:
The wish sentence must be the opposite of the reality. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Using the verb to be , we use were with all the pronouns. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Using can , we change it for could and using will for would. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
