This seems forward-thinking, but they have not fully developed the curriculum. Seems to

Courses are integrated in each "silo" and start with 100-level courses such as Ideation
(ID) and Typography (GD) and continue to include Human Centered Design and
Professional Practice courses.

Does not appear to be interdisciplinary at all across design ﬁelds.

Each "silo" is fully developed from day-one. There is not a "foundations" year that is
integrated across disciplines.




Rhode Island School of Design

Private art-only university, offers a variety of design courses but they are totally focused
on design.

Offers BFA and MFA degrees in all areas of design including: Architecture, Interior
Architecture, Graphic Design, and Industrial Design.





The ﬁrst year academic program typically consists of three year-long studio courses
(Drawing, 2-D and 3-D) taught by Foundation Studies and four Liberal Arts courses:
English Composition + Literature and History of Art + Visual Culture I in the Fall; and
History, Philosophy, and the Social Sciences (Topics) and History of Art + Visual Culture
2 (Topics) in the Spring.

The following years focus on each specialty ie: industrial design, graphic design, or
interior architecture.

Highly focused on design education. Visual Culture and Full year of basic design
education in foundation year is informative and probably really helpful that students are all
together.

Foundations program is highly developed. They are churning out designers with a strong
aesthetic base.




National Institute of Design

NID offers professional education programs at Under Graduate and Post Graduate level
with 5 faculty streams and 16 diverse design domains. NID has established exchange
programs and ongoing pedagogic relationships with over 35 overseas institutions.

The Professional Education at NID has both UG & PG Programs — Graduate Diploma
Program in Design (GDPD) of four years duration for students after 10+2, or equivalent
like AISSCE/ IB/ ICSE, and the Post-Graduate Diploma Program in Design (PGDPD) of 2
to 2 ½ years duration for graduates; particularly from architecture, technology,
engineering, ﬁne and applied arts, information technology, computer science, etc.





undergraduate:
GDPD commences with a two semester rigorous Foundation Program (multi-disciplinary)
Final two years are intense depending on your concentration, but students are strongly
encouraged to work across the disciplines.

graduate:
2 to 2½ year program offered in the following speciﬁc areas of sectorial specialization in
17 design programs under the ﬁve faculties

The overall structure of NID’s program is a combination of theory, skills, design projects,
and ﬁeld experiences supported by cutting edge design studios, skill & innovation labs
and the Knowledge Management Centre. Sponsored design projects are brought into the
classroom to provide professional experience. Interdisciplinary design studies in Science
and Liberal Arts widen the students’ horizons and increase general awareness of
contemporary issues.

A unique feature of NID’s design education program is the openness of its educational
culture and environment, where students from different faculties and design domains

what we need to do:

Overall, the schools that we chose to review in detail form a wide variety of examples of
“good” things going on in programs all over the country.
A few of these are similar to other programs in their curriculum organization.
A few of these are totally structured differently. What we can learn from them?
Innovation is key (ﬂexibility)
Some programs are silo-ed - some are not
Very few programs are actually interdisciplinary

INNOVATION...and...head down, power through.
