EDUC – 3003 Week 2Assignment 1 Ashley Ann Abron Walden University 1)Pages 35-41 of Assessing and Guiding Young Children's Development and Learning outline four general decision-making categories of assessment. Briefly, summarize each of these. Identify when assessment for each category is most likely to be effective. When simplified teachers use assessment into two categories (1) to use the information to work with their students individually/group and (2) to monitor their progress. To avoid being overwhelmed with information the assessment process follows four general decision-making categories. The first is Assessing to Know Children Individually and as Members of a Group. The one thing that individuals and groups have in common is that they each have their own approaches to what and how they learn. Teachers will have to maneuver working with both and how their attitudes and habits can affect their learning. Knowing the abilities of children individually as well as in a group will help the teacher to aid in their educational development and interest. Assessment will be most effective when a teacher can discern when to assess a child individually and when to asses as a group. In addition a teacher should know the strength of the individual and the group. If an issue is clearly limited to an individual there is no need to assess the whole class. Teachers should also keep in mind what can influence a child's behavior such as the environment, time of day, materials available, and other children. Another general decision-making category of assessment is Assign Progress Toward Expected Outcomes in Development and Learning. This means that as children progress through their education it is expected that they meet certain requirements. Children are expected to reach certain milestones not only in their growth and development but also in their academic’s studies. To ensure that children are reaching these milestones assessments should be frequent can cover various aspects for them to be the most effective. The third general decision-making categories of assessment are Expected Child Outcomes in Major Development Domains. When assessing student’s teachers should focus on the major domains of child development; physical, social, emotional, and cognitive. Each domain is important to the overall development of growth of a child. For teachers to successfully assess each domain of a child is to record the progress of each, even if it isn't required. Conclusively Expected Child Outcomes Stated as Standards is the last category of the assessment decision making. Organization in child education from state departments to school districts have written out specific academic and developmental standards for children of every age group. Standards are directed towards content and performance from the general to the specific. In this regard, assessment is most effective when it is flexible and comprehensiv.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts, and respond with a minimum 150 words to at least two who discussed an advantage or disadvantage different from your own. Elaborate on the relevance of their findings to the context of the standards movement. Challenge your classmates by asking a question that may cause them to reevaluate or add components to their initial response By: Steven “National standards are intended to serve as frameworks that will assist state departments of education and local districts in organizing knowledge and skills into curricula. National standards do not define a national curriculum per se. They do, however, specify broad areas of agreement on content that all students are expected to be exposed to.” Hall, G.E., Quinn, L.F., & Gollnick, D.M. (2014). The advantages of national standards are all the student in the country are being taught the same information and teacher are being held accountable to ensure that the student knows the information by testing done. This information is kept up with by benchmarks that this is a necessary checkpoint for when the students have learned certain subject matter. The testing can determine how many benchmarks are needed for that school. The disadvantages are import to consider with the test teacher sometimes focus only on testing and no other important skills that should be developed throughout a child’s education. The other common issue is students do not always take the test seriously and do not put forth their full effort and as a result, the test result is not accurate. The field I am entering into is not tested but is required in most states to complete high school. Physical Education is required for in the state of Florida for the purpose of educating the student on nutrition and general health. This is the area I want to teach not only are you taking the time to educate the student but you are promoting a healthy lifestyle for them as well. Reference Hall, G.E., Quinn, L.F., & Gollnick, D.M. (2014). Introduction to Teaching: Making a difference in student learning. Los Angeles: Sage Publishing. By: Hanan Standards and assessments are a way to understand where the strengths and weaknesses are in education. It also helps the parent understand their child’s progress in specific subjects, and the rating of schools. The scores of theses tests help teachers identify weaknesses and holds them accountable for the education of the children. “Performance based standards are designed to assure accountability and improve schools through exerting top down control by holding students, teachers, schools, and districts accountable for the results of student achievement” (Hall, Quinn & Gollnick, 2014). An advantage of the standards movement is providing a reference for the parents and teachers in identifying where the focus needs to be in regards to each child. This helps the school and the families assist the children in the areas t.

6Performance-Based Assessment Michelle Del Guerico/Science Source/Getty Images Pretest 1. Worksheets, exams, and screening tests are examples of performance-based assessments. T/F 2. Performance-based assessments provide an authentic evaluation of student learning. T/F 3. Performance-based assessment is particularly vulnerable to error based on bias. T/F 4. Portfolios are best used to collaborate with children. T/F 5. Rubrics are easy to design and use. T/F Answers can be found at the end of the chapter. © 2015 Bridgepoint Education, Inc. Introduction Learning Objectives By the end of this chapter, you should be able to: ሁ Define and give examples of performance-based assessment. ሁ Identify the advantages and understand the limitations of performance-based assessment. ሁ Identify multiple approaches used to assess performance in early childhood. ሁ Explain the purposes and development of portfolios. ሁ Design and implement rubrics to evaluate performance-based outcomes. Gretchen is a Head Start teacher in a predominantly migrant community in south Florida. Her 17 students range in age from 2 to 4 and are developmentally diverse. This Head Start curricu- lum is aligned with Florida’s Early Learning and Developmental Standards, which are devel- opmentally based. These standards encourage a play-based curriculum, so Gretchen arranges authentic and culturally relevant activities. Children will be guided in free play, art, sensory experiences, science projects, embedded early mathematics, stories and dramatic play, and gross and fine motor activities. Gretchen spends the first few weeks of school establishing routines, such as transitions, meals, and independent and group play. Additionally, Gretchen talks with, reads stories to, and is a play partner to all the children as she carefully observes her students’ social development, problem- solving skills, early academic competencies, movement, and communication strengths. She rec- ognizes that 4-year-old Kristen is well liked by the other children, is eager to learn, has already learned to count to 20, and can reliably retell the main parts of a story after a single reading. At the same time, 3-year-old Stetson prefers playing alone, is easily provoked to aggression, and has a difficult time sitting through the reading of a short book, either alone or with other children. It could be said that Gretchen conducted performance-based assessment of her students. That is, she observed Kristen, Stetson, and the rest of her children performing curriculum-based activi- ties. Through the remainder of the year, Gretchen will continue to make performance-based assessments to be used to plan activities to challenge Kristen and scaffold Stetson, as well as the other 15 children in the class. Outcomes for these activities will also be continuously monitored to ensure that all children make adequate progress. Introd.

1Assessment: A Foundation Image Source/SuperStock Pretest 1. Assessment refers to use of tests to measure children’s achievements. T/F 2. Assessment always has the same purpose of determining if and how much children are learning. T/F 3. One of the best ways to use assessment outcome information is to determine if changes need to be made in methods and services to children. T/F 4. The advent of testing means that early childhood professionals do not need to be concerned about their biases and the manner in which these biases might influence assessment outcomes. T/F 5. Federal funding of public education is linked to students’ performance on standardized tests. T/F Answers can be found at the end of the chapter. © 2015 Bridgepoint Education, Inc. All rights reserved. Not for resale or redistribution. Introduction Learning Objectives By the end of this chapter, you should be able to: ሁ Describe the evolution of assessment practices in education. ሁ Understand and use the key language of assessment. ሁ Explain how assessment assists early childhood personnel in making decisions to continually improve the quality of services. ሁ Summarize the principles associated with quality assessment. ሁ Explain the primary shifts in education and the manner in which these trends affect assessment practices. Remi is an early intervention professional and has been working with infants and toddlers and their families for 15 years. She has a deep understanding of child development and knows what to expect of children at different ages. She also recognizes when children’s development is sig- nificantly or even slightly more advanced or delayed than what is expected at a given age. When she started her career, Remi relied heavily on formal assessments to determine students’ performance level, but now she rarely does more than observe children and take mental notes. Remi is such a keen observer that she feels it is unnecessary to document in writing whether chil- dren are responding to parents’ or professionals’ intervention. The only assessments she com- pletes are those required by law. Recently, however, Remi was asked to take on a new professional apprentice, Anika, who has completed a degree in early childhood (EC) education. Anika is eager to put theory into practice; she wants to use all the tools she studied in school. Not only is Anika aware of changes in early childhood that increasingly require more assessment evidence, she also knows that regular data collection is important for being an effective professional. Anika writes notes, collects observational data, and keeps a record of children’s successes on work samples. She analyzes the data and compares the results often to see whether children are making progress. When she approaches Remi and suggests that, based on her observations, they work with parents to introduce rich language activities, Remi becomes defensive. Remi sees no reason to change .

SPE 500 Clinical Learning Notes Assigned Teacher: Patricia Tessner at Rock Quarry Elementary About Patricia Tessner Greetings! I am Patricia Tessner, a Special Education Teacher at The Rock. Since working here over the past seven years I have taught Special Education students in all grade levels. Currently I am teaching students from Kindergarten through 2nd grade. I am originally from Canada but Tuscaloosa has been my home for over 17 years. My background is in Pediatric Nursing. My time spent on a Pediatric Neurosurgical ward influenced my decision to become a Special Education teacher. That background and experience has enriched my understanding of students with special needs. I have two boys; one is in 11th grade at Northridge High and the other is a junior at the University of Alabama. I decided to become a teacher after spending time with them at school and substitute teaching between my nursing and teaching careers. I graduated from the University of Alabama from the Multiple Abilities Program in 2007 with my Master of Arts in Special Education and am certified in both General Education and Special Education. I have learned through my experiences that the way children perceive, process and communicate about their world is unique to each and every one. I work closely with the General Education Teachers and am often in the General Education classrooms. This allows students to learn with their peers and develop the learning skills they need to become successful independent learners. I welcome parents questions, concerns, and input. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail, leave a message for me with the office, or send a note with your child. I can arrange my schedule to be available to meet before or after school, or during the school day. Day 1: Initial Meeting at Rock Quarry Elementary 10/20/15 (2:45pm – 3:00pm) Met with Special Education teacher Ms. Tessner at Rock Quarry Elementary to discuss objectives and schedule to complete 15 hours of Clinical studies. Day 2: 10/21/15 (8:10am – 1:00pm) Met 1st graders Bryant and Alex and worked on: Pronouncing words using flashcards and sound chart (pic in attachment) Pronouncing words with the “long a” and “short a” sounds, using pictures/cards of words such as gas, game, pan, tape, cap, cape, cake, gate, rake, cat, map, and lamp. Ms.Tessner gave each student a small dry erase board to practice writing the words Kindergartners Alex and Callen started off writing the letter “e”, pronouncing the “o” sound, and used pictures to pronounce words and each syllable of the word. I worked on reading and pronouncing words with 2nd grader Sean. 3rd grader Demarian and the Mrs. Lewis, Rock Quarry Elementary’s other Special Education teacher, worked on reading comprehension. She gave him a passage to read, along with 7 questions to answer Assisted the Special Education students in the general education class setting, along with Ms. Tessner. Day 3: 10/22/15 (8:00am – 12:00pm) 2nd grader S.
