Eoin Colfer
Eoin Colfer is the New York Times best-selling author
of the blockbuster Artemis Fowl series. He was born in
Wexford on the southeast coast of Ireland in 1965, where he
and his four brothers were brought up by his father (an
elementary school teacher, historian and artist of note) and
mother (a drama teacher). He first developed an interest in
writing in primary (elementary) school with gripping Viking
stories inspired by history that he was learning in school at the
time. Eoin got his degree from Dublin University and qualified as
a primary school teacher, returning to work in Wexford. He
married in 1991 and he and his wife spent about 4 years
between 1992 and 1996 working in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and
Italy.
In 2001, the first Artemis Fowl book was published worldwide to
much success shortly thereafter he left teaching to concentrate
fully on his writing. To this day, Eoin has written 6 Artemis Fowl
books which have sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

Artemis Fowl II is a child prodigy who is
originally an adversary but eventually
an ally of the fairy civilization. He has
Irish ancestors, black hair, blue eyes,
very pale skin, a nearly
dysfunctional family with an elaborate
history of crime, a loyal manservant
and bodyguard called Butler, millions of
euros at his disposal, and the highest
intelligence of his generation. He is also
a criminally good genius who thinks of
ingenious yet wicked schemes in order
to restore his family's fortune.

Using his brains, Butler’s brawn and the boundless
family fortune, Artemis locates and translates the
book. The latter task is no mean feat. Computer
screens blaring “NEGATIVE” sprawl across the pages
where other panels explore the real world Artemis
lives in: A dark, eerie mansion too vast and empty
for one little boy and his delusional mother. Artemis
finally solves the puzzle and states with no emotion
whatsoever that fairies are now under his command,
bound “to help me restore the financial fortune and

Artemis Fowl Book One

Man v. Society--crime

In Artemis Fowl, while performing The Ritual, Holly is
kidnapped by Artemis Fowl and Butler, taking her to Fowl
Manor. There, she is kept in a cell and Artemis tells
Commander Root that they can only get Holly back if they
pay a ransom of one ton of 24 carat gold. Root refuses and
launches a time-stop to save Holly. The LEP lays siege to
Fowl Manor for eight hours. She manages to complete The
Ritual while in her cell and escapes, not long after
the LEP send in a squad to save her. Holly almost dies
during this escapade, which involved saving and healing
Butler after their fighting with a troll. Holly is set free after
the LEP send in the gold in exchange for the still-alive
Holly. The LEP then bio-bombs the house and assumes
Fowl is dead; however, they underestimated Fowl because
he becomes the first human to escape the time-stop.
Artemis also gives back half of the gold in exchange for the
healing of his mother. Mulch Diggums steals a large-sized
portion of the gold left over.

The mesmer is a magical talent available to most
fairies, even if they haven't performed the ritual for
a long time, even fairies who have lost their magic,
can perform them. Certain humans also have the
talent. The mesmer requires eye contact and
therefore cannot be performed on someone
wearing mirrored glasses. It increases the chance
of IQ loss on stronger willed people. It is possible to
fight the Mesmer for a short time if cast on a
strong willed person such as Butler. The eye
contact needed for the mesmer can be obtained
through a digital screen.

The Rule of Dwelling, established by King Frond in The Book of the People,
forbade fairies to enter human buildings without an invitation. If a fairy
breaks the rule, he or she will get sick, with symptoms including nausea and
vomiting. If one does this repeatedly, he or she will lose his or her Magic.

The Ritual is what fairies have to The Supernatural—man vs. nature conflict

The Main Antagonist

Briar Cudgeon's background is not talked about much in any of the books, but it is
said that his family was politically powerful. In Artemis Fowl, he is a power-hungry
lieutenant in LEPrecon and is jealous of Commander Root's position. It also says that
he used to be Commander Root's roommate. They even grew up in the same tunnel,
and knew each other for over 600 years. He is one of the few people to call the
commander by his first name.
At first he just gives the impression of
being a pompous but essentially
harmless individual however his true
sinister nature soon emerges. He
is Retrieval One's leader, then becomes
Acting Commander. After an attempt to
exploit the situation and seize power, his
plan is thwarted and in a rage he
assaults Foaly. Root incapacitates him
with a tranquilizer dart that reacts with
some banned mind accelerating drugs
Cudgeon had been experimenting with,
resulting in him becoming deformed. He
is demoted to the rank of private and left
consumed with a desire for vengeance.

Briar Cudgeon

Chix Verbil is a Sprite, who,
like most male sprites, thinks
of himself as irresistible to
women. He is a private in
the LEPrecon.

Like most minor characters, Chix Verbil's personal history is not known. He
appears in Artemis Fowl, Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident and Artemis Fowl:
The Opal Deception. He is a member of LEPrecon and a friend (though he would
say boyfriend) of Holly Short.
In Artemis Fowl, Chix is present only briefly, as the sprite operating the troll's
cage during Briar Cudgeon's brief stint as Commander. He also is one of two
fairies guarding the gold from the Siege of Fowl Manor, but he fails to do so,
because he is too busy laughing at Commander Root. Mulch Diggums steals two
dozen bars and escapes.

Stockholm Syndrome
Stockholm syndrome, or capture–bonding, is a psychological
phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have
positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending
them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the
danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially mistake a lack
of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness. This is recorded from an
incident during a Stockholm bank robbery in August 23-28, 1973, when
hostage employees were held while their captors negotiated with police.
Stockholm syndrome can be seen as a form of traumatic bonding, which
does not necessarily require a hostage scenario, but which describes
“strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one
person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the
other.” One commonly used hypothesis to explain the effect of Stockholm
syndrome is based on Freudian theory. It suggests that the bonding is the
individual’s response to trauma in becoming a victim. Identifying with the
aggressor is one way that the ego defends itself. When a victim believes
the same values as the aggressor, they cease to be a threat.
