- A worldwide movement of local governments dedicated to achieving tangible improvements in global environmental conditions through cumulative local action. International Headquarters in Bonn, Germany ICLEI USA is part of an international organization that operates 14 offices on 7 continents. The ICLEI global network works on clean energy, climate protection, biodiversity, sustainable procurement and water issues. ICLEI's work is carried out through non-profit affiliate organizations nationall incorporated in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, India, Mexico, Germany, Japane, New Zealand, the Philippines, Sout Africa and Korea. ICLEI also conducts project activities through our regional offices in P.R. China and Indonesia. Local governments and their associations constitute ICLEI's global membership. As a democratic, membership-driven association, every member has a vote at council meetings where the priorities and direction of the organization are determined. Governed by the ICLEI global charter put in place by its founding members, our mandate is to build an active and committed membership of local governments
- Describe: - current number of cities and counties (~600 US, over 1100 worldwide) - percent of population represented (about a quarter of US population) - very high rate of growth (~40% in 2008) Most of these local governments are participating in our Cities for Climate Protection campaign – ICLEI’s flagship program in the U.S.
- How does ICLEI help you as a local elected official or staff? ICLEI is the only organization that provides all of the necessary tools, resources, and technical guidance needed to help local governments achieve their sustainability and climate protection goals. ICLEI tools and resources assist members along every step of the five milestone process to achieving GHG reductions and sustainability. Current ICLEI members have access to a wide range of our targeted toolkits, guidebooks, trainings, and other resources, as well as on demand technical assistance. In addition to the cutting edge tools and technical assistance, members can be part of impacting policy at the national and international level. California ICLEI members will also be part of a new engagement strategy in Sacramento working with policy makers to spur local action throughout the State.
- FOR BENECIA: Offer overview of services, and highlight Climate Mitigation/Sustainability in context of these services What services are provided to ICLEI members? First and foremost, ICLEI members are part of an international peer network where city and county staff and elected officials connect to share challenges, successes, and best practices. Staff provide assistance to local governments in advancing their mitigation, adaptation, and sustainability work. Members receive exclusive access to regular trainings and webinar events. Membership includes recognition for climate protection and sustainability achievements like the Sustainability Leadership Awards which will be announced at our upcoming Local Action Summit in Washington next month. Members received communications and media support designed to support community wide efforts, as well as opportunity for national leadership including participation on task forces, board membership, and advisory committees. In addition ICLEI offers selective consulting services on a case by case basis for local governments conducting GHG emissions inventories, and developing climate action and sustainability plans.
- Can reduce energy consumption in buildings and facilities, reduce fuel consumption by fleet vehicles and equipment, reduce the amount of government-generated solid waste that is sent to a landfill, and increase the amount of energy that is obtained through alternative energy sources. By quantifying the emissions coming from government operations, this report will assist policymakers and stakeholders in addressing the City of Vista’s contribution to climate change.
