2. Imperialism Defined
Colonialism - the policy
Imperialism - a policy of Annexation - the action
or practice of acquiring
extending a country's of annexing something,
full or partial political
power and influence esp. territory
control over another
through diplomacy or
country, occupying it
military force
with settlers, and
exploiting it
economically

3. Social Darwinism
✤ Is the theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same Darwinian
laws of natural selection as plants and animals
✤ This could be used to justify Imperialism by saying that the best country will prevail
above the others and swallow the rest on its rise to the top

4. "White Man's Burden"
✤ It started as a poem
✤ It is the idea that white man has the
responsibility to civilize other cultures
✤ Racism!!!!

5. Racism and the Missionary Impulse
Racism - the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities
specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or
races
Paternalism - the policy or practice on the part of people in positions of authority of
restricting the freedom and responsibilities of those subordinate to them in the
subordinates' supposed best interest (this can be considered racism because it is saying
that one group believes they should control the other because they are superior)
Actions of missionaries could be paternalistic because they came as foreigners to lands
and told the people there that they’re religion and culture is wrong and they should be
Catholic

6. The Scramble for Africa...
✤ Took place from 1880 to 1914
✤ was the mass rush of countries to colonize Africa
✤ The Berlin Conference was conference where the major European countries discussed
who controlled what in Africa
✤ Liberia and Ethiopia were the two countries that were not colonized during the
scramble for Africa

7. Nationalism
Nationalism - An extreme form of
patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts
marked by a feeling of superiority over
other countries

8. Colonized vs. the Colonizers
✤ An industrialized nation might take over another nation for more resources, workers,
and even just pure greed and want.
✤ I assume the reaction of the people would be of anger and frustration because these
weird foreign people are just marching in and taking over their lives and making them
change their culture
