Marley, who died seven years before the start of
the story. Scrooge is rich but ‘cold’, ‘mean’ and
‘miserly’. He has no friends.
Bob Cratchit Scrooge’s clerk. A kind, very poor man with a large
family and a very sick son.
Jacob Marley Scrooge’s former business partner. Died on
Christmas Eve seven years before. Returns as
ghost to warn Scrooge to change his life
Fred The nephew of Scrooge and the son of his sister,
Fan. Fred is the opposite of Scrooge: kind, happy,
friendly, interested in people
Fan The sister of Scrooge and one of only two people
he has ever been close to. Fan rescued Scrooge
from his awful school and is the only person to
show him kindness in his childhood. Her tragic
early death clearly marked Scrooge,
Bella The fiancee of Scrooge who leaves him because
she feels he loves money more than her
Fezziwig The first employer of Scrooge and a wonderful role-
model. Scrooge admired Fezziwig but did not follow
his example
