3. Dr John Singleton was an
amazing Christian in Victoria
from the 1850’s – 90’s
* He was the 1st
physician & founder
of the Melbourne
Children’s Hospital
* He founded the
Collingwood Free
Medical Dispensary
(now known as the
Singleton Medical
Welfare Centre).
4. Dr Singleton established a Gospel
Mission Hall in Little Bourke Street
in the midst of a street full of
brothels to win men for Christ.
This mission saw
100’s of ruffians
& drunkards in
Melbourne turn
to Christ.
Today (in 2013)
the mission is
run by the
Salvation Army
5. Dr Singleton met notorious
bushranger, Ned Kelly in
Melbourne Gaol
Singleton gave
Kelly a New
Testament, plu
s Christian
tracts &
showed him
how to
commit his life
to Christ
6. IS NED KELLY IN HEAVEN?
Two major themes –
1. Is there anyone outside the
bounds of God’s Love &
Grace? ( 1 Timothy 1:15)
2. God is making ordinary
people into being
extraordinary !
(2 Timothy 1:6-7)
8. ORDINARY
CALLED TO BE
EXTRAORDINARY
2 Timothy 1:1-7
Dr John Singletom
God is calling ordinary Christians to
do extraordinary things to extend
His Kingdom
9. Ordinary Called to be Extraordinary
2 Timothy 1:1-7
New International Version (NIV)
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of
life that is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my dear son:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Thanksgiving
3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night
and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to
see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which
first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am
persuaded, now lives in you also.
Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of
God, which is in you through the laying on of my
hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us
timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
10. Ordinary Called to be Extraordinary
1. Saved by Grace
2 Timothy 1:1-5
Timothy had a Christian mother &
grandmother, but this did not make
him a Christian.
Is anyone outside God’s
amazing Grace?
Paul’s testimony..1 Timothy 1:14-15
“I was the worst or chief of sinners.
God’s Grace saved me.”
11. Ordinary Called to be Extraordinary
2. Ignite God’s Gifting
verse 6
Timothy was prophesied over by
Paul (1 Timothy 4:14).
He was a sickly young man
(1 Timothy 5:23);
naturally timid ( 1 Corinthians 16:10)
& suffered much persecution in
seeking to serve God.
12. Ordinary Called to be Extraordinary
3. Be Empowered by God..
Verse 7
A) a spirit of power…
(dunamis = dynamite) A fresh/daily
anointing & empowering of Holy
Spirit…c/f Ephesians 5:18
B) Love – (agape) showing Jesus’
love
C) Self discipline – having a sound
mind, not being governed by fear.
13. Ordinary Called to be Extraordinary
