THE PASTOR’S CORNER
Q. I read in a report from the U.S. Conference of Catholic
Bishops that 60% of those who say they are Catholic believe in
the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The remaining
40% believe that the Eucharist and our going to Communion
are only symbols. Are the figures accurate?
A. The figures might be accurate, but the pollster might be
asking the wrong question. If you asked one hundred
Catholics a different question, say “Do Catholics believe the
Holy Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ?”, perhaps
more than 90% would say “Yes”. Nevertheless, widespread
poor Catechesis over the past decades has left Catholics
confused and uncertain about the Real Preserve, and we
should all be concerned about that.
If you have any questions you think would be helpful
for me to address in The Pastor’s Corner, please call me at
563‐7145 or email me at frfred@midcoast.com.
Thank you – Father Fred
