3. First Question: How do we do more with less? That is, how can we be more strategic across programs, centers, and departments to stretch the pockets of funding that we each have at our disposal? Collaborate across programs, centers, and departments to identify and bundle available funds and other resources to build persuasive packages. Cluster prospective students in a program or department to highlight the potential for peer-to-peer support. Cultivate a willingness among programs, centers, and department to take a chance on creative , outside-the-box experimentation.
5. Second Question: Should we consider a strategic and focused shift in funding from recruitment toward retention efforts that address the needs of currently-enrolled graduate students? Provide support services to newly enrolled students to insure that they are better prepared to get the most out of their graduate experience. Establish more study and writing groups among current students across sister disciplines to encourage peer-to-peer support as they prepare for written exams or dissertation. Create more dissertation fellowships to increase the PhD completion rate.
6. Third Question: What new revenue sources can we identify and cultivate that are not directly tied to state or federal funding, and how do we go about doing that? Cultivate new donors by demonstrating the potential value of their investment in the work that we do. Identify and apply for grants from private corporations and other entities—some governmental—that can be used as start -up funding for new initiatives that will allow for the reinvestment of resources in student financial support.
