Editor's Notes
This is the first level of the Koinonia Connection. This is an exercise where groups of 2, 3 or 4 are established. The intent of “KC” is to accelerate community. This first level is just an “information dump.” The idea is to communicate for 90 seconds, just sharing simple facts about yourself. Let them see the example you have up on the screen so that they have a bit of a template to follow.
The Hand of the Lord time is a time where guys can share what the Lord has been doing, how has the lord “shown up” in your life and ministry? It is also a time where you can share where you need to feel the Lord’s touch in the near future about specific issues. Encourage the guys to track these prayer requests and to be proactive in praying for the guys in the roundtable
This is the second level of Koinonia Connection. In this experience, keep the same groups, 2, 3 or 4. Have them share something from their past, a defining moment or a value that they stand for. Have them do this in 45 seconds or less and then to be quiet. The idea is for the others they are matched up with are then to ask questions, with the idea of “peeling the onion.” Empathic listening is the idea here with a view of getting to know more about their group.
These self assessment questions cause a person to pause and contemplate what is truly important to them. The last questions usually prompt the most need for clarification. The mother’s and father’s message were the main message that the person took away from their encounters with their parents.
The idea of the balance wheel is to examine the level of satisfaction with where the person is, with 1 being the least satisfied and 10 being the most satisfied. Have them write a small paragraph of “intent” around the areas where they sense they need improvement.
The free writing exercise is used to develop personal vision. After spending some time in the past (questions) and present (balance wheel) the writing exercise is used to describe in vivid detail the “picture” of what you would like your life to look like in 5 years. Have the participants write for 5 minutes, without stopping during that time. After they have written non stop for 5 minutes, have them review what they wrote and circle the key words or phrases that suggest significant change needs to take place for those things to come about. They have just written 5 year goals.
Form groups of 2, 3 or 4 again. They may be the same ones already formed, or new groups. Have the guys share some key milestones in the church that have occurred in the church before they arrived and since they arrived at the church. Give a “state of the church” summary of what is currently going on at their church. Repeat the Free Writing Exercise as before, just this time have them write about their church. What should it look like, in vivid detail, five years from now, Lord Willing!!
