Reggaeton is a form of urban music that became popular with Latin American youth, blending West Indian influences like reggae and dancehall with Latin American genres such as bomba, plena, salsa, and merengue. While reggaeton originated in Panama as Caribbean migrants helped build the Panama Canal, it gained most popularity in Puerto Rico. The migration of Caribbean people to Panama contributed to the development of Spanish reggae and the origins of reggaeton.
