Water Disputes in Central Asia Water in Central Asia and Caucasus is an object of competing interests and thus a potential source of conflict. The term ‘conflict’ has strong negative connotations in the region. ‘ Water disputes’ is more acceptable. Editor's Notes

  1. This session explores whether water experts can contribute to solving water conflicts. My answer is yes: an experienced conflict facilitator must work in close cooperation with experts that provide technical and scientific evidence. Only by combining a trust-building process with commonly agreed standards and joint data can disputing parties establish sustainable agreements. In the following I will share the findings from our work with the European Commission in Central Asia last year.
