WHOLE-CLASS EXERCISE “THE FALL” From Handout
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas Which of 3 Relationships Was Attacked First? SERPENT: attacked relationship between Adam and Eve and God
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas WHO Attacked The Relationship? The Original Language in The Story Does Not Give Us Reason To Immediately Equate The Two, But The Connection Would Come Later
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas THIS IS NOT A MECHANISTIC WORLD It has to be sustained by choice!
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas HOW Was The Relationship Attacked? TREE: Only speculate about what it was…. SERPENT: Raised the question in Eve’s mind designed to turn Eve’s heart away from God.
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas WHAT CAN WE LEARN? The temptation to break our relationship with God often seems to follow a predictable pattern. -First, something happens to bring the prohibited "fruit" to our attention. -Second, something happens to contradict God's instruction. -Third, God is cast as our enemy. -Fourth, this chain of events creates for us a test — whether or not we will trust God and obey Him, or whether we will turn away from Him.
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THE ATTACK? NAKED!!! This was NOT a sexual awakening….something else was going on here.
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THE ATTACK? THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE SEE ANYTHING LIKE VULNERABILITY IN THE GENESIS STORIES FIRST TIME WE SEE AN ALTERING OF GOD’S CREATION
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THE ATTACK? What’s it mean to be naked…..VULNERABLE! 1 st Conflict w/Adam/Eve and God Ambivalence is introduced into the relationship with Adam and Eve Human relationships were never going to be the same
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas THE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD DAMAGED ADAM AND EVE TRY TO GET LOST
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COSMOS Adam's relationship with the natural world had been damaged as well. Before Adam and Eve ate the fruit, every word of the Genesis stories portrayed nature as beautiful and beneficial. God warned Adam he would have a cursed life, full of hard work, pain, thorns, and sweat. Ultimately God told Adam, "Dust you are and to dust you will return."
THE FALL: Synthesis of Ideas THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COSMOS Adam and Eve's act was not an isolated one whose consequences ended with them. The serpent introduced suspicion into Eve's mind.
Romans 1 Longest and most theologically significant of Paul’s letters Focus on righteousness
Romans 1 ATTRIBUTES OF GOD Dominant in Paul’s message here Eternality — 1:20 Power (omnipotence) — 1:20 Divinity — 1:20 Righteousness — 1:17, 18 Wisdom and knowledge (omniscience) — 8:33ff. Impartiality — 2:11, etc. Mercy — 9-11; 12:1; 15:9 Love — 5:8ff.; 8:35ff. Immutability — 11:29 Sovereignty — 8:31ff.; 9-11
Romans 1 SINFULNESS OF MAN God’s attributes are the standard by which SIN can be defined SIN: Practice which does not conform to the attributes of God SIN: Believing and behaving in contradiction to the character of God (Rom. 3:23) God is a God of glory
Romans 1 SINFULNESS OF MAN universal (all men are condemned as sinners) inexcusable (all men have received and rejected God’s revelation) incurable (we cannot save ourselves—apart from God’s grace and intervention, we are lost)
Romans 1 ALL SIN IS A PERVERSION … of that which God is and that which God created us to be.
Romans 1 THE WRATH OF GOD This is the primary topic of the passage God’s wrath is not only a response to man’s sin, but it CORRESPONDS to man’s sin
Romans 1 THE WRATH OF GOD Both PRESENT (1:18-32) AND FUTURE(2:1ff) (1) While God’s present wrath is largely passive, His future wrath is active. (2) God’s present wrath allows sin to increase; God’s future wrath will put an end to sin, causing it to cease. (3) God’s present wrath is often not recognized as such, and Christians must believe it by faith; His future wrath cannot be missed. (4) God’s present wrath is reversible; His future wrath is not.
Themes In Biblical Literature BREAK
Mark 7:1-23 THE PROBLEM WITH TRYING TO BE GOOD “ON YOUR OWN” Problem One : The Pharisees' system of rules had actually carried them away from God. Problem Two : The Pharisees focused their attention on exterior problems , when the real problem was an interior one . PHARISEES: Focused on words and deeds only; not hearts
Mark 7:1-23 THE PROBLEM WITH TRYING TO BE GOOD “ON YOUR OWN” ENDURING PRINCIPLE If you can get your heart right, you can live right….but you need help in that.
Mark 7:1-23 THE PROBLEM WITH TRYING TO BE GOOD “ON YOUR OWN” EVE….. Demonstrated what Jesus taught the Pharisees 2 Ways To Respond to the Problem Wrong : Sin is breaking God's rules, therefore getting along with God is a matter of being a good person (keeping the rules). Right : Sin is having a heart turned away from God, therefore getting along with God is a matter of having your heart put right with God.
