OUTAuction 2011 Catalog
1. OUTAuction
Ten years of celebrating established
and emerging artists, featuring
GLAAD's top 100 artists
www.glaad.org
2. “Art washes
away from the
soul the dust of
everyday life.”
-Pablo Picasso
On behalf of the planning committee, thank you for joining us at GLAAD’s
Tenth Annual OUTAuction. Your support this evening helps GLAAD continue its
culture-changing work to share stories from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) community that build support for equality.
Like the artists represented here tonight, GLAAD is changing hearts and minds through
images that promote understanding – shattering stereotypes and helping Americans see
the common ground we all share.
Little by little, we’re washing away the misperceptions and advancing national support
for full equality; but it’s your support that makes it all possible.
To changing the world one image at a time,
Maxim Thorne, Event Chair
Matthew Schwartz, Planning Committee Co-Chair
James Kleeman, Planning Committee Co-Chair
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) amplifies the voice of the LGBT community by
empowering real people to share their stories, holding the media accountable for the words and images
they present, and helping grassroots organizations communicate effectively. By ensuring that the stories
of LGBT people are heard through the media, GLAAD promotes understanding, increases acceptance, and
advances equality.
3. GLAAD would like to thank the following supporters for making this evening possible:

AUCTION

Henri Matisse
Planche I
Signed lithograph, 1920
20 in. x 23 in., custom frame
Value: $8,500
Courtesy of Robert John Russo Gallery
Henri Matisse was a French artist born in 1869, mostly known for his use of color
and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker,
and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded,
along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to
define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of
the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.
By the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition
in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing,
displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a
leading figure in modern art.
