PowerPoint Tips: Keep it Simple, Focused and Engaging

Notas do Editor

  1. What are the purposes of a powerpoint? WE THINK: The purpose of PPTs is to make a presentation of info / an argument more effective.
  2. ADVERTISING, BUSINESS IDEA PITCHES, SALES PITCHES
  3. INSTRUCTIONAL, CLASSROOM, TRAINING SESSIONS
  4. MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS, PUBLIC SPEAKERS, SOCIAL ADVOCACY/CHANGE, HUMANITARIAN GROUPS
  5. PERSONAL USE, PHOTO ALBUM, ABOUT A PERSON
  6. Your powerpoint, visually and textually, should be easy to follow. It should flow. Leave out distractions.
  7. Use visuals/images to enhance your argument. Also, font choices are a great, simple way to add emphasis to key points and draw the viewers attention without being too bold. Being consistent is one of the most important things to keep in mind. This is where many mistakes are made in ppts. Do not over-animate, it takes away from your content.
  8. Keep it to 3-6 bullets per slide. No rainbow backgrounds. BASICALLY, make sure that all of your visual elements are working with you rhetorical elements. Every choice you make with the design of your slides/presentation should be in attempt to enhance your argument or SUPPORT your content. If something overshadows the content or does not match the content, you don’t need it.
  9. Run from Beginning to 2:16ish
  10. Keep this slide short
  11. Ethos3 is a presentation design agency with premier presentation designers and PowerPoint designers. If that link doesn’t work - http://labnol.blogspot.com/2007/05/best-powerpoint-presentations-in-world.html
  12. CALL TO WRITE: With this ppt, they are trying to advertise their services and make their company seem creative and efficient. Their purpose is to show off their abilities and gain clients. Not only does this ppt function as an ad of sorts for Ethos, but also as a sample of their work. It needs to show off their skills to the greatest extent possible in order to persuade potential customers to hire Ethos. IT HAS A STORYLINE- a narrative- a fluid arch to it GOOD DESIGN ELEMENTS-- Pretends that the viewer is stupid? - keeps it simple - only a few words on each slide keeps viewer engaged Focuses on visual elements for communication Simple black and white color scheme Uses ellipses - gives a sense of suspense and surprise Doesn’t hit you with a lot of info on one slide Uses white space Key words are bolded and creator uses font size to emphasize points (ie. WHY?) Uses font from their logo Changes up the text placement on the slide - For the majority of the ppt, the narrative text appears at the bottom or in the bottom right-hand corner, though sometimes, for accent, it is placed in the center of the slide or toward the top. For example, “Henry, meet Erica” or “Petey” – for comedic effect. Almost like a period at the end of the sentence.
  13. This PPT is successful as a persuasive presentation/argument for their company and services Accessible and relatable - Simple, familiar diction / casual tone Uses humor - witty and funny ****We think that Ethos definitely accomplishes their goals with this presentation. They do this not only with their strong design and visual enhancements, but also with their thoughtful presentation of their brand and the way in which they create a clear personality for their company.*****
  14. Our society has a need to be constantly visually stimulated and is feeding the growth of forms of communication that incorporate multiple strategies (like ppts) They are becoming more and more important Are ppts getting more or less popular?
