Technical Challenge of Hungarian LED Street Lighting System
1.
2. THE TECHNICAL CHALLENGE
Innovative hungarian developers set up a
new special public light system with the
LED technology, based on on-line
communication system. Its unique options
for luminous intensity-control also serves
the customer's expectations at the highest
level. The followings are presented the
capabilities, features and specifications of
the ALEDIN system.
THE DEVELOPMENT PROCEDURE
In 2008, in the early initial phase of this
modern LED lamp development was
begun. By 2012 after the long process of
the installation of continuously expanding
new features, the public lighting
technology has resulted a new,
independent, intelligent street lighting
system.
The next picture shows the lamp’s current
form, which is a successful GOP-funded
project. It was created and completed
during this development phase.
The winner tender announced by the
hungarian government:
„GOP 1.1.1 - Creating an intelligent LED
Lamp Street Lighting Network”
The following research laboratories and
institutions participated in the testing and
developing phases.
• Universitas Scientarum Szegediensis:
optimization tests,
• Kandó Kálmán Faculty of Electrical
Engineering:
photometric measurements,
• College of Dunaújváros:
thermal measurements,
THE OPTMIZATION PROCEDURE
The emitted light is provided by the
american-made CREE LEDs, which has
one of the best luminous efficacy among
LED types in the international market.
One of the most important unique results
of the Lamp is the
Equable Illumination Capability
on the road’s surface.
The ALEDIN uses a proprietary
optimization process: each of the LED
lights has its own, custom illumination
angle and lens, which is a result of a
complex mathematical algorythm process.
This way all of the LED lights shine on
exactly where they supposed to shine on.
Getting the equable illumination
capability, all we have to do is to give
further datas into the optimizer software:
- Based on the size of the illuminated
surface the illumination lightmap can be
easily calculated with the followings
parameters:
- the height of the lightspot,
- the necessary lux intensity on the
surface,
- the lower and higher limits,
3. The software determines those values
which are needed to get the equably
illumination lightmap:
- the number of installed LED lights (we
can minimize the illumination intensity as
an option, during the optimization),
- the unique angles of the LED lights,
- the type of the lens for the current angle
(the used lens can be predefined for the
software by an .xml file)
This procedure results the lowest possible
number of LED lights and energy known
worldwide to achieve the desired
uniformity.
The resulted equably illumination picture
(we call: “light-carpet”) eliminates totally
the unpleasant variations of the
overlighted stains and dark places
between the streetlamps.
The optimization also provides an
opportunity, by using the existing angles
(by using the same molding) we can
replace by other sodium lamps with
different efficiency.
At this time we focusing on new
optimizations to replace all different types
of existing and well-known sodium street
lamps by using 64, 48, and/or 32 leds.
4. THE LIGHTMAP
The final result of the optimization
procedure is shown below.
By using the optimizer software, the
predefined direction of LEDs and the
geometry of the moulding together fully
eliminates the light pollution.
In addition, it also significantly reduces
the glare phenomenon: while someone
stands under the installed lamp, the
differently oriented LEDs cannot blind the
underlying viewer either.
The existing ALEDIN outdoor lamp
includes 1W, 135 lm/W luminous efficacy
Cree LEDs. If we wish to use other LED-
types, all we have to do is a simple
reoptimize by using the existing angles, or
by creating a fully new moulding.
OUR PATENTS
The depth of the development and the
custom solutions are reflected in the
following patent:
1. Hungarian Patent Registration
P10 00 303: Eljárás elemi fényforrásokat
optimalizált konfigurációban tartalmazó
világítóeszköz készítésé-re, továbbá ilyen
világítóeszköz részét képező
hordozólemez és világítóeszköz.
(2010.06.09)
2. International Patent Registration
Publication No.: WO/2011/154756
International Application No.:
PCT/U2011/000052: Method for
constructing a lighting device with discrete
light sources and thus obtained lighting
device. (15.12.2011)
This is an absolutely unique innovation on
the market. In case the efficiency, the
intelligence system and the technical
parameters can be analyzed whenever it
is needed.
5. ♦ Light-pollution
Due to the geometry of the construction
there is no light pollution at all.
♦ Lifetime
The lifetime of the LED crystals are
around 50,000 hours. This value is
applied for the LED operation at normal
operating temperature. With the custom
built-in thermal protection, dimming and
also with heat-dissipation, this lifetime
value can be increased considerably in
the ALEDIN lamps.
♦ Heat-protection
The luminaire system is able to control its
own operation, meaning by permanently
monitoring of its operation temperature,
and in the case of extreme external
heating the system will automatically
immediately intervene.
♦ Heat-dissipation
The result of the unique design (system)
is the 29.7°C heat-step, which provides a
pleasant working environment for the
LEDs, event during the hottest summer
nights.
♦ Aeration
The ALEDIN luminaire has an unique
solution to the problem called “tropical
breathing". The luminaire can divert the
extra air-pressure which comes during
the normal operation from the heating of
the LEDs. In this way the pressure will
not damage the gasket.
EFFICIENCY
The savings provided by the ALEDIN-
system:
• primary: the positioned LEDs provide
50-55% energy savings, without dimming,
• secondary: with a well-developed
brightness control about 10-15% more
energy could be saved.

6. ON-LINE COMMUNICATION
There is an intelligent control installed in
each luminaire, so we can organize them
into different groups.
Each group contains one GSM-gateway
equipped control lamp (called: “Master
lamp”) the other lamps are simple called
“Slave lamps”. The Slave lamps and the
Master lamp communicate with each
other, furthermore the Master
communicates with the Operator.
By this two-way communication of the
Master unit we can monitor and modify
the parameters of the whole network
online whenever it is needed.
We can get alerts, alarms, consumer
datas on-line, and we can control the
brightness, the date of turning on/off.
The system allows for more openness,
external integration of field devices, eg.:
• Motion-sensor: In case of any motion
providing brightness,
• Traffic counter: with looking at the traffic
it can generate a new light-scene for the
current road.
• Environment light sensor
… etc.
