4. Dear friends,
The guide “Monastic Roads” narrates of the “cloistral
archipelagos”—Moldova—and would like to invite you
to take part in pilgrimage and spiritual-cognitive tourism
to get familiar with the history, religion, culture, traditions
and contemporary of our country.
During the long centuries the lands that nowadays
form the territory of Moldova survived hard times, while
the faith remained the main shelter to protect from
calamities and misfortunes. The numberless monasteries
erected in this country are the unequivocal proof thereof:
Tipova (XII century), Capriana (1429), Hincu (1678), Japca
(XVII century), Tiganesti (1725), Harbovet (1730), Harjauca
(1740), Varzaresti (1770), Dobrusa (1772), Curchi (1773),
Saharna (1776), Rudi (1777), Tabara (1779), Calaraseuca
(1782), Condrita (1783), Suruceni (1785), Cuseleuca (1786),
Raciula (1794), Frumoasa (1804), Hirova (1805), Zloti (1841)
and others. All the aforementioned monastic complexes
represent the factual proof of the faith of our nation.
The cloisters represent historic heritage and cultural
significance and also a witness of the rigid repulse against
the soviet oppression and religious prohibition suffered
in XX century by this land, and especially by its churches,
monasteries and people of faith. That period almost all
sacred cloisters survived closure and dilapidation, and were
turned into stables, clubs, sport halls, deposits, hospitals
and the like. Upon heralding of independence, the Republic
of Moldova has managed to revive its traditions, to reopen
monasteries and to construct new churches.
Visits to monasteries provide tourists with a chance
to discover Orthodox rites and customs practiced in the
cloisters, to touch upon the Orthodox religion. For instance,
you will find out the structure of a monastic complex
(a church, cells, refectory, hotel for pilgrims, a chapel,
a kitchen, a belfry). These are the unique examples of
architecture of special interest for those who wish to follow
how cloistral architecture changed from epoch to epoch.
Those who follow the “Monastic Roads” of Moldova
will chance to admire the cloistral ensembles in congruence
with picturesque landscapes and to testify how unique and
original is location and surroundings of every cloister.
Inclusion of these pearls of architecture and nature
into the national and international touristic routes will
allow us increase the interest of monastic communities
towards restoration, rehabilitation and preservation of the
cloisters, and on the other hand to attract more visitors and
guests.
To wind up let me cite the utterance of John
Chrysostom: “Try to discover the divine and it will be far
easier to discover the secular.”
You are welcome to Moldova!

General Director of Tourism Agency of Republic of Moldova

12. Monasteries of
Moldova. History and
contemporaneity
To stay in Moldova and not to visit one of its
monasteries would mean not to admire marvelous
architecture, originality, Orthodox culture, unique
natural landscapes, old icons, relics of Saints and
many other attractions. The modern touristic routes
run across the most prominent and renowned
cloisters. All in all, 55 Orthodox sacred cloisters are
opened in Moldova as of yet: 22 monasteries and 6
cloisters for monks, 24 monasteries and 2 cloisters
for nuns, and 1 monastery for Old-Believers.
The first monasteries appeared in Moldova
already in remote XIV century. One of the oldest is
Noul Neamt monastery founded in 1392. According
to historic records, Varzaresti (1420) and Capriana
(1429) could also be referred to the oldest cloisters
in Moldova. Although, scientists make further
discoveries, encounter new documents proving even
earlier appearance of monastic customs in Moldova.
Those remote times monasteries as spiritual
centres were donated lands, got considerable
funds for development and construction of
temples. At first, churches were made of wood,
while cells were wicker. Appearance of almost any
monastery is described by an interesting legend.
It is problematic to figure out whether it is true or
imaginary, though. Thus, according to the legend
Condrita monastery (Chisinau municipality) was
founded by the Hiaduks’ ataman Condrea. Once
Condrea felt pity for his deeds and met an old monk
who advised him to plant a tree and to construct a
monastery. One more legend is linked to the cloister
in Bursuc village of Nisporeni district (Hincu). It
was founded by Moldovan boyar Mihail Hincu. As
the legend reads, he together with his daughter
found shelter in the place being persecuted by the
Tatars. They made a wish: should they survive, a
monastery would be constructed right in the place.
The daughter of Mihail Hincu took her monastic
vows and was given the religious name Parascheva.
She was the first to settle in the skete. In order to
maintain the convent, Mihail Hincu cherished his
patrimony Sacareni—1.040 desyatinas of land
covered by forest suitable for construction. Today
Hincu convent is the pearl of the Moldovan sacred
cloisters.
The monastic life in this place was not
easy and the monasteries were suffering much
from arrays of enemies. The cloisters were burnt
down to earth and destroyed therefore people
started constructing monasteries from stone and
surrounding them with thick stone walls with gun
slots. Such walls have been preserved in Curchi
monastery (Orhei district), Capriana (Straseni
district) and others.
The monastic complex included winter and
summer churches, a chapel, a house of Father
Superior, a belfry, cells, refectory and kitchen.

14. Mănăstirile din
Moldova. Istorie şi
contemporaneitate
fapt, cercetătorii fac periodic noi descoperiri deseori
Boierul şi-a ţinut promisiunea.
Viaţa călugărilor şi maicilor era deloc uşoară, or

Easter in Moldova
The celebration of Easter begins with the liturgy in
church. It is very merry and jolly and even “light”
service. It differs from many other common divine
services. It begins in the middle of the night in every
church of Moldova. A little hint: you have to come
earlier or you will stay outside because at this very
night all the churches are overcrowded. You may
also go to a beautiful monastery in Moldova. Tourist
companies offer one-day trip to the holy places of the
country.
Every year the Gracious Fire is brought from
Jerusalem to Moldova in the Holy Night. The authority
of the country, priests and common people wait for the
fire in the central cathedral in Chisinau. The candles are
lit from this very fire brought from Jerusalem. Then the
candles as the symbols of faith and blessing go to many
other churches, monasteries, and houses of Moldova.
The priest consecrates the brought dishes after
the end of the liturgy. According to the tradition the
basket must be full of paskha, Easter cake or “kozonak”,
eggs dyed red, “babele”—(babky—sweet pudding
made of noodles or macaroni), sugar and salt.
Coming out believers exchange a triple kiss and
greet each other with the words “Christ is risen!”—
“Truly He is risen!” The whole week every volunteer has
the right to ring church bells.
The Easter feast starts upon coming back home.
It is necessary to add, that ceremonial dishes – paskha
and Easter cakes are baked beforehand on Thursday of
Holy Week. The same time eggs are dyed. Housewives
usually cook a lot of food because it is a custom to share
Easter food to everybody.
Except ceremonial muffins and eggs the baked
lamb is prepared for the holiday table. Rolls made of
veal, baked rabbit, ham, goose or turkey are important.
It is necessary to emphasize that the fasting is over and
the Holy Celebration has come into each house!
The Easter celebration continues for forty days. It
is due to the Bible where Christ revealed himself to his
disciples after the Holy Sunday. On the 40th day Jesus
Christ ascended into heaven. Usually people visit each
other all the week after the Holy Sunday. The only thing
the priests warn against is that the celebration of Eater
should not turn into the sin of gluttony and of course it
should not be turned into drunkenness.
The Museum of Nature and Ethnography
traditionally organizes the Easter exhibition, the main
event of which is the competitions of artists painting

22. Religious variety
of Moldova
The Law on Religious Cults adopted in Moldova
guarantees freedom of conscience and freedom of
religion and entitles various cults to equality. The
Moldovan nation reveres the traditions based on respect
and tolerance of people of various religions. Therefore,
our country sees no conflicts on religious grounds. On
the contrary, being interested about the history of this
country, the history of its nations, people of various
religious beliefs pay visits to Orthodox, Catholic and
Judaic churches. Modern touristic routes are organized
in a way so that the acquaintance with the country is not
confined by trips of Orthodox cloisters. The country sees
Catholic churches and synagogues attractive from the
standpoint of architecture, history and religion.
According to various data, 93-96 per cent of
the country’s citizens are Orthodox Christians. The
Orthodox Christianity has always been the leading
religion in Moldova. When the land suffered from the
yoke of the Ottoman State, mosques were constructed
in the Moldovan Principality. It is known that nice
Muslim temples were erected in Old Orhei and Causani.
Unfortunately, none of them have survived. At present,
there is no mosque in the republic obviously due to the
little number of people that adhere to the Islam.
According to the data of the recent census, 1.5 per
cent of the residents of Moldova profess the Judaism.
Synagogues have been opened in many cities of the
republic, for instance, in Chisinau, Orhei, Balti, Edineti
and others. To the turn to ХХ century only in Chisinau
there functioned more than 70 synagogues, many of
which were opened in usual residential houses, while
some occupied detached buildings. Proper synagogues
were built by the associations of glass-cutters, butters,
traders in wood, shop assistants, coffin-makers,
pharmacists etc. At present, one synagogue functions in
the Moldovan capital at the address: 8 Habad Liubavici
Street, Chisinau. It was constructed by the association
of glass-cutters already in 1880 and was the only one in
the republic to remain open in the soviet times, when
religion was oppressed. The largest and magnificent
building to the turn to ХХ century was the choral
synagogue (1913). At present the building has been
much reconstructed and hosts the Russian Drama
Theatre “A. Chekhov”. Some preserved buildings of
synagogues have been included into touristic routes
across the places of Jewish heritage of Chisinau. For
instance, the synagogue at the crossing of Tighina and
Sciusev Streets constructed in 1886; at present the
building hosts a Jewish educational establishment.
The wooden synagogue at Diorita Street has been
reconstructed to host the Centre of Jewish Culture,
Cult and Charity. In this synagogue they carried out the
funerals of Torah after the pogrom of 1903. At present
the Museum of History of the Jewish of Moldova is
located inside the premises.

24. Diversitatea confesională
a Moldovei
ХХ, doar în
capitală existau peste 70 de sinagogi. Multe dintre
