My talk at Ignite Sault 3. "If you can change the room, you have changed the culture, at least for that moment. This means that each room we enter needs to become an example of the future that we want to create. This room, this way of gathering and engaging becomes a metaphor for the larger world and its possibility." - Peter Brock I could have titled this "Confessions of a community junkie". - I&#x2019;d like to begin my talk on community by telling the story of a lonely consultant, who decided one day that he liked being his own boss, he needed to be part of a group to learn, find work and to keep himself from going stir crazy.
- So one day he invited a few other consultants in his field to meet on a regular basis and see what might happen. They started meeting online every week, using video conferencing to swap stories from the trenches, and ideas for dealing with challenging situations. The seeds of a new community had taken root.
- After a while the conversation shifted to the future. They imagined what could be and set goals and objectives to get there. In just 3 months, they achieved all of the goals you see on the slide here.
- That story illustrates in a small way the power of bringing people together to create a new future. Here in the Sault, I think we have a lot of potential, waiting for the conditions to blossom.
- Peter Block is my inspiration. In his words, to create the future we want we must transform the isolation and self-interest within our communities into connectedness and caring for the whole.
- Clay Shirky speaks to the remarkable transformation happening in our society. We can all be creators, thanks to the ease of tools and information the Internet offers. It&#x2019;s become easier to be active participants in communities that matter to us, both globally and locally.
- I believe we are seeing the re-emergence of everyday super heros. We are reclaiming the future for ourselves rather than waiting for the power brokers of society to decide our fate.
- If each of us is a hero, then there are unsuspecting heroes among us, everywhere. Because of technology, we are able to connect in new ways, and now we unsuspecting heroes can be known to ourselves and each other.
- One element of strategy is to create an alternative future one room at a time. If you can change the room, you have changed the culture, at least for that moment. This room, this way of gathering and engaging becomes a metaphor for the larger world and its possibility.
- The Ignite and Podcamp experiments have proven that the Sault, like many other cities has an appetite for open, participative events, and that we do have creative talent we want to support and nurture.
