Questions to Consider
       • Are you burned out after 4
         years of college?
       • Are you considering getting
         married: if so, you will also
         want to consider your spouse’s
         career.
       • Are you unsure of your career
         goals?
       • Are you over-burdened with
         undergraduate student loans?


If your response is” yes” to these questions, it may be best to take some time to
continue teaching and reflect before making this commitment of time and money.
On the other hand…

     • Are you pretty certain
       that teaching is your
       calling, and are you…
     • Ready to advance both
       professionally and
       financially in your
       teaching career?



If your response is yes to these questions, now may be the
best time to get started with your graduate education plans.

At this point, we are still working on the self analysis.

What do you enjoy? Do you enjoy working with students for
whom English is their second language? How about children with
mild to moderate or severe disabilities, or gifted and talented
children? Maybe you really enjoy working in the educational
field, but believe that you have gifts and talents in leadership or
technology.

Now is the time to look within and be honest about what you
enjoy and see as your gifts and talents. But you’re not finished – it
doesn’t help to love teaching basket weaving if there are no
basket weaving positions available.

Here are some steps you can take to investigate what the
economic environment is like in your area:
                          • Examine your county’s school
                            district salary matrix.
                          • Go to the district’s website
                            and examine the help wanted
                            ads.
                          • Talk to your building principal
                            and ask about the trends in
                            your school and district.
Environmental Analysis
        • Search for national educational
          hiring trends.
        • Look at corporate job openings using
          search sites such as Monster or
          Career Builder.
        • Talk to college graduate education
          advisors or deans – they are
          generally well-informed in this type
          of data.
        • You can also talk to other
          professionals in the area of studies
          you’re considering – you will learn a
          wealth of information from these
          folks.
