3. The Rich North
The Poor South
In terms of development the world can be divided in two
halves:
4. This divide is also called the ‘Brandt Line’.
The Brandt Report was published in 1980 to highlight the
growing gap in social and economic development between
the developed and less developed countries of the world.
The report was complied by an independent group of
statesmen headed by Herr Willy Brandt, the former West
German Chancellor.
The report concluded that ‘The North’ and ‘The South’
were mutually dependent upon each other, and it warned
against ‘The North’ establishing economic barriers against
the growing industrialisation of ‘The South’.
5. However, the divide is over 25 years old and is losing it’s
validity.
