How many people here have experienced or are experiencing a change in business model in your company? Of Those, How many were part of the strategic decision making for the duration that the change occurred? OK – Well my talk today is mainly for those with their hands down
Background in Chemical Engineering from Madison, WI: 4 engineering internships during college, 3 Years at General Mills, 4 years at Birds Eye foods : Expecting my 3 daughter any day now (due in 10 days). Last year – it’s your fault – here’s what I need from you to be innovative This year – It’s my opportunity– here’s what I need to do to change things myself Just about every one is here for the same simple reason: (SWITCH SLIDE)
QUOTE – Because someone above knows it is important. While it is often agreed that innovation is a top priority, for the individual trying to implement innovative ideas it can often feel a bit like THIS (SWITCH SLIDE) I am going to take you through one short story that will hopefully spark a couple of ideas for you personally and give you a few new ways of thinking about personal innovation
I am not going to tell you that you should paint your feathers black to blend in, but instead understand how the other ducks are different and demonstrate to them why yellow could be better
Like you many of you, my company Birds Eye Foods has been going through a change in business model since being acquired by Pinnacle Foods– what was said to take only 3 months is still going on after 6 months – it appears to be a very complex matter that I play no strategic role in. Many products are in limbo as things sorted out – my frustration turned into a question – what could I do now to deliver innovation now changing business climate Through one quick example I hope to touch on what I feel are the 4 keys to Personal Innovation in any business model. Allow you to be successful in any business model
Has anyone here been to an ideation or meeting that really didn’t end with a great list of ideas or outcomes? Of course, everyone has, well I am going to tell you one story of my own to help tie these points together. Read the story I wrote for book proposal – adlib: 6 months first ideation – binder of torn out magazine pictures, list of thoughts, 3 colored pens, post it notes, and pad of paper Everyone sat down – and then the meeting organizer said: That that not exactly the start I had been expecting – there was not introduction, no agenda, no definition for what would come of the ideas One person brought up the idea of using a new cleaning service for cleaning our lab coats I was shocked into slience 1 hour later, 12 ideas – I felt very frustrated
This is the way I felt – What might normaly become an ongoing complaint that I share with my peers: bitter
I just started to write out what seemed so obvious to me
Most important part in my story – figuring out how it would benefit the meeting organizer/ closest to business needs
If I said – you have 1 hour to save the world – where would you start? Like I said, spending time understanding the business need and current problem is probably the most important step in the process – if your business models are changing, this will take even more effort. You don’t want to be this guy – always complaining about his great idea not being listened to or always jamming your ideas down.
Another important part of my approach is to feel impowered to take action – Specifically in this example: Financial action – I am not talking about spending 100K without talking to you manager. I am talking about reasonable costs for the job function you were hired to complete. Assume you make $30 an hour – probably cost the company $40/ hour – 20 working days a month on average It is in your company’s best interest for you to not ask permission to buy things that will improve the way you do your job
Thinktertoys – book on ideation techniquest Computer Tool needed to improve the ability to capture and build on ideas during the session I have the business case in my head if challenged – no need to spend the time upfront – just get it, use it, and move on. In This case - Trouble maker is just another term for innovator:
The final piece is to capture your success – in my example I created a basic summary from the first ideation session to compare with the 2 nd session that I lead using my new tools/ suggestions
What was the outcome? During the session, about 12 unique buckets were identified with more than 10 ideas in each catagory: The final outcome – Compare it to 18 people, 1 hour, 12 ideas – do you think I got questioned on the $300 I spent on Thinkertoys and Mindmanager?
