Changing States Exemplar
1.
2. Aim: To observe the change of state of ICE. Prediction: We think that ice will melt in 5 minutes. It will not change colour or make any sound. It will turn into cold water.
3. Materials: Block of ice (1/2 cup) Plate Camera and tripod 2 lamps Water bottle Plastic cup Stop watch
4.
5. Results: We watched the ice melt. While the ice melted, it moved on the plate and made a small cracking noise once. The ice took 53 minutes to melt. There was a plate of water at the end. Click in blue box to play.
6. Conclusion: The ice took a lot longer to melt than we thought, even though we had lamps on it. It made a noise and moved because it was contracting. It did turn into cold water when it melted because the room was warmer than the freezer.
7. Reflection: I learnt that because lamps are warm they make the ice melt, and warmer temperature causes a solid to change into a liquid. I want to know ….. Why don’t icebergs melt?
