Time To Use Photo Storage Online — Don't Lose Your Precious Memories
1. Time To Use Photo Storage Online —
Don’t Lose Your Precious Memories
Remember traditional
photo albums? What a
lovely way to re-live
memories of you
childhood, birthdays,
graduations, sporting
achievements, first dates and family holidays, or
adventurous trips abroad… You would sit on
your sofa for hours turning pages and gazing
starry-eyed at those snapshots. Ah, those were
the days… But when was the last time you
actually looked through a traditional photo
album? Probably a long time ago because as
traditional photo prints are gradually
disappearing, so are traditional photo albums.
The bad news? The traditional photo album has
yet to be replaced by something equally
emotional and tangible. Today, our photos are
spread across a variety of devices, and keeping
track of our memories becomes an almost
impossible task.
2. When digital photography started to gain in
popularity, storing those photos was not a great
problem. Firstly, photos were smaller in size as
high-definition digital cameras were few and far
between, and secondly, the number of devices
just was not as large as it is today. You would
use your digital camera exclusively to take
photos, and then simply download these images
onto your PC or laptop. You would view and
store them on the same device in your home.
Today, online photo storage solutions need to
address a great number of challenges, which
could not be foreseen in those early days of
digital photography:
o
o
We take photos with a number of
devices, and downloading them to one
device is time-consuming as multiple
connection methods and software
installs are required
The amount of images we have to store
is getting larger as file size grows due to
the increasing quality of DLSRs and
even smartphone cameras
3. o
o
The loss of our digital photos is a
potentially heart-breaking scenario as all
our memories are now stored digitally
We want our files to be available from
anywhere and accessible from our
mobile devices
By looking at the above requirements it is pretty
clear that the traditional way of storing our
photos on one PC is not efficient enough
anymore. This conservative solution struggles to
fulfill the two main demands of the modern age
of digital images: security and accessibility.
Photos stored on one PC can easily get lost, for
example they might not be recoverable if the
PC’s hard drive fails. And this is an urgent
matter: Most people have been taking digital
photos for about 10 years, about the time after
which a PC’s hard drive (especially in laptops)
is likely to fail. Or your PC might get stolen.
Even a backup on an external hard drive will not
save you in such a scenario, as this is most likely
stored in the same physical location. In addition,
as far as accessibility is concerned, there is
obviously no such thing at all if all your data is
stored on one PC only.
4. It is not even possible to view the same photos
on a tablet in the living room, unless you have
done enough tinkering with your router to get a
home network going, which is likely to be buggy
anyway and beyond the abilities of many home
users.
The answer to the question lies undoubtedly in
the cloud. Online photo storage allows the user
to access their files from everywhere, and it is
impossible for those photos to physically get
lost. As always for a growing need, there is a
growing number of solutions, and today the
question is not IF you should store your photos
in the cloud, but WHERE. Here, it comes down
to personal preferences (which mobile apps or
websites you prefer using) and budget
(additional storage space costs extra and prices
vary).
Some photo storage sites are designed for
professional photographers, while others offer
general storage for anyone and for all sorts of
data. Some of the contenders in the “general”
category are Microsoft’s SkyDrive, Dropbox,
iCloud or Google Drive, while the dedicated
5. sites are Flickr (recently overhauled), Adobe’s
new cloud storage solution Revel, and all-in-one
solution like Pics.io which apart from storage
also will offer professional photo editing
features which rival those of professional
desktop solutions.
Professional and hobby photographers, the time
has come to trust the cloud: It is the safest, most
efficient and most accessible way to store your
memories and to make sure that you do not lose
them.
Have you adopted online image storage
solutions and/or editing tools like Pics.io? Or do
you still trust local storage to do the job for you?

worst happens? Let me know in the comments!
