What kind of verb tense is used in the texts? SIMPLE PAST  Her parents sent her to a private Catholic school in Louisiana. …she used to misbehave constantly… Hayek wasn’t used to going against her parents’ wishes. …a job in a local theater, which didn’t pay much… Although Hayek was used to considerable success…   USED TO + VERB  WAS USED TO + ING VERB  SIMPLE PAST  WAS USED TO + NOUN
When do we use Simple Past?
When do we use “used to”?
When do we use WAS USED TO? My mom always told me to do exercise and so I was used to jumping.  But now that I live alone I do not do exercise anymore
When do we use WAS USED TO? This person was used to cassette tapes BUT now he has to use something else
It's easy to confuse used to do and be used to. Both forms look alike, but they have very different meanings and structures. First let's look at used to do, orused to + verb. When I say I used to do something, I mean that I did something regularly in the past which I no longer do now.  For example, "When I was a child, I used to fight with my siblings, but now we get along."  We can also use used to do to talk about something that was true in the past but is not true now,     for example, "Drinking alcohol used to beillegal in the U.S."  *In other words, drinking alcohol was illegal in the past, but it is no longer illegal.
Be used to means something different.  If you were used to something, you were accustomed to it. It was normal or usual for you.  Be used to is always followed by a noun or gerund (verb ending in ing).  For example, I can say I was used to the rain, or I can say that I was used to staying up late.

  • 8. When do we use WAS USED TO? My mom always told me to do exercise and so I was used to jumping. But now that I live alone I do not do exercise anymore
  • 9. When do we use WAS USED TO? This person was used to cassette tapes BUT now he has to use something else
  • 10. It's easy to confuse used to do and be used to. Both forms look alike, but they have very different meanings and structures. First let's look at used to do, orused to + verb. When I say I used to do something, I mean that I did something regularly in the past which I no longer do now. For example, "When I was a child, I used to fight with my siblings, but now we get along." We can also use used to do to talk about something that was true in the past but is not true now, for example, "Drinking alcohol used to beillegal in the U.S." *In other words, drinking alcohol was illegal in the past, but it is no longer illegal.
  • 11. Be used to means something different. If you were used to something, you were accustomed to it. It was normal or usual for you. Be used to is always followed by a noun or gerund (verb ending in ing). For example, I can say I was used to the rain, or I can say that I was used to staying up late.
