3. Colours
The main colours for the ‘Hot Fuzz’ poster are black
and white. These colours drain any saturation from
the poster however, create quite a mysterious dark
effect. Black often signifies death and mystery as it is
symbolic of evil and the supernatural. This is
contrasted with the white/grey colour which
sometimes connotes purity and peace. The colour
could represent some sort of hope in a dark situation
as it can represent light.
4. Symbols
In the two males sunglasses in the poster, we can see
a city sky line. This may be symbolic to the film as we
get the impression it plays some importance to the
narrative. The audience does not need any
foreknowledge for this symbol as it is fairly obvious
as to what the image is.
5. Figures & Objects
The main figures in the poster are the two male characters.
The people are represented photographically to show the
audience that they feature in the film. From the poster, we get
the impression that they are very mysterious as they are in
dark clothing, perhaps suggesting something evil as well as
hiding something in the dark. As well as this, we cannot tell
what they look like which adds to the mysterious effect.
Although the males faces are mainly covered, we can still tell
the expression on their faces is a fierce look of violence, this
creates an impression for the audience of what the film may
be like. One male takes up more of the frame of the poster as
opposed to the second man. This creates the impression that
he is superior to him and hold more importance.
6. Audience
I think that the intended audience for the ‘Hot Fuzz’
poster is more so males. The dark colours appeal to
boys and the fact that the film hosts violence adds to
this. The film may appeal to various ages but more so
skewed to teenagers as this type of action genre will
appeal most to these.
7. Persuasive Techniques
The use of tagline persuades the audience to view the
film. It almost gives the audience a hint of what the
film contains and therefore, will attract these
audiences to view the film. As well as this, the use of
actors names may appeal to the audiences if they are
particularly fond of an actor then they will be
inclined to see the film.
8. Genre
The film poster belongs to the action genre. We can tell
this from the use of dark colours as this often signifies
violence which is stereotypically involved in action films.
As well as this, the way that the models in the poster are
dressed implies that they may be of some sort of ‘mafia’
or police as they are dressed smartly in suits. This type of
possible gang culture is also a convention of the action
genre. The use of the metal spike/object in the models
mouth suggests almost a hard attitude; the actors are not
to be reckoned with. This adds to the action genre as
there is usually a type of hard character that is sometimes
the cause of the action.
9. USP
The unique selling point of the film could be said to
be the use of actors. If people are aware of who the
actors are and have previously enjoyed their work
they are more likely to go and view the film. This
could be just one of the USP’s of the ‘Hot Fuzz’
poster as well as the genre and narrative.
10. Critiques
No critics are quoted on the film poster however, the
use of the tag line telling the audience that the film is
from the makers of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ (another
successful film) may persuade audiences to view the
film a if they have previously enjoyed this film then
they may be interested in ‘Hot Fuzz.’
11. Tag Line
The tag line of the poster almost contains elements
of humour. The poster is obviously an action film
and therefore we expect it to contain violence
however, the poster implies that there is only
‘moderate’ violence. This could almost be use of
sarcasm as people typically want violence in an
action film. The poster also makes out that the ‘cops’
are the biggest thing in the film which emphasises
the action genre.
