Charles Rouse Sr. (1924-1988) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist known for his time with Thelonious Monk's quartet from 1959 to 1970. He studied clarinet before focusing on tenor saxophone and played in several big bands in the 1940s-1950s before joining Monk's group, where he adapted his style to Monk's music by improvising with deliberation and often restating melodies. He was later a founding member of the group Sphere, which paid tribute to Monk. Rouse had a distinctive solo style with Monk that alternated reiterations of themes with bop runs.

2. Tenor saxophonist:
Charles Rouse studied clarinet before taking up tenor saxophone. He played in
the bop big bands of Billy Eckstine (1944) and Dizzy Gillespie (1945), but made
his first recordings as a soloist only in 1947, with Tadd Dameron and Fats
Navarro. After playing rhythm-and-blues in Washington and New York, he was a
member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra (1949-50) and Count Basie's octet
(1950). He took part in Clifford Brown's first recordings in 1953, then worked
with Bennie Green (1955) and played in Oscar Pettiford's sextet (c. 1955); with
Julius Watkins, also one of Pettiford's sidemen, he led Les Modes (later the Jazz
Modes), a bop quintet (1956-9). He joined Buddy Rich briefly before playing in
Thelonious Monk's quartet (1959-70), the association for which he is best known.
During the 1970s he worked as a freelance, and recorded three albums as a
leader. In the early 1980s he was a member and joint leader of the quartet
Sphere, which was dedicated to the performance of Monk's music; he performed
in Wynton Marsalis's group at the Concord Jazz Festival (California) in 1987 and
the following year recorded compositions by Monk in San Francisco with Carmen
McRae. In the 1960s Rouse adapted his style to Monk's work, improvising with
greater deliberation than most bop tenor saxophonists, and restating melodies
often. His distinctive solo playing with Monk may be heard on Shuffle Boil
(1964), in which he alternates reiterations of the principal thematic motif with
formulaic bop runs.

MISSION STATEMENT
Artists-in-Residence and Visiting
Artists Program provides a supportive atmosphere for professional artists in a
diversity of art forms within a collective art setting. The program(s) provide an
opportunity to educate the public in the process of the creating art.
Program Goals:
• To enhance the diversity and quality of the creative services
• To provide support of artists who wish to share their vision with the community
in a specific manner
• To stimulate public participation in artistic processes in order to build
appreciation for the value of arts in daily life
• To provide artists with affordable, subsidized studio
space (local AIR Program only)
• To provide artist stipend, housing, and materials costs for specific short-term
residencies with visiting artists who create new works of art and expand
programs and audiences (Visiting AIR Program only)

• To provide the community with a dynamic artists-in-residence reflecting multiple disciplines in the arts;
• To enrich the community through interaction with artists and artwork they would not otherwise experience.
• To encourage new audiences’ participation in the arts, and to support artists who act as ambassadors in the community.

Program Description:
By providing a structure for the relationship between the working artist and the
community, the Visiting Artist-in-Residence Program is designed to further
enhance the diversity and quality of the creative services that provide and
support artists who wish to share their vision with the community.
Eligibility:
Artists who create original work and live in New Jersey, New York, or
Pennsylvania. The artist must be the originator of artwork s/he creates, rather than
an interpreter of works previously created; for example, a playwright as opposed to
an actor, visual artist as opposed to a curator.
Not Eligible:
• Proposals from artists from outside New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania.
• Projects in which the artist primarily functions as a teacher or instructor within an existing curriculum.
• Students are not eligible as artists in residence.
Review Criteria and Process:
Review Panel – Applications are reviewed by a panel of artists and arts
professionals from the region, and non-voting representatives from the staff and Board of Directors.
The panelists are chosen for their expertise and judgment in the types of art forms represented in the applicant pool.
Panel members usually rotate off after a three-year term.
Proposal review criteria – Assessment is based on artistic excellence, qualifications of the artist, quality of the proposal
as it relates to the AIR Goals and Objectives, interaction of the artist with the public, project budget feasibility, and
evidence of planning and ability of the artist to implement the proposal.
Residency Length:
Visiting Artists-in-Residence are selected to participate for a one to three-month term.
A pre-planning session several months before the start of the residency is recommended. provides travel expenses
and hotel accommodations for the pre-planning session, in addition to housing and artist stipend during the
residency at CRIPA.
