UART – Stands for Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter It is a piece of hardware that acts as a bridge between the processor and the serial communication protocol or port (RS-232). It performs parallel – to – serial data conversion at the transmitter side and serial – to – parallel data conversion at the receiver side.Asynchronous serial communication. A serial communication can be done using fewer wires as compared to its parallel counterpart. It is a cheapest communication device with a single wire for transmitting the data and another wire for receiving. When the high-speed data transfer is not required UART is used. In a simple serial communication, 3 pins are used: TxD, RxD and GND. At Transmission side (i.e. From Microcontoller), one can write data into UART Data Register (e.g. UART0_DR) by using software code. These 8 bits of data from Data Register is passed to Tx FIFO Buffer. After that, the data is sent out(one at a time) from Tx Shift Register. TxFIFO flag = 1 (Buffer full) TxFIFO flag = 0 (not full - Software can write to Data Register) At Receiver end, there is Rx FIFO Buffer. RxFIFO Empty flag = 1 (Buffer is empty) RxFIFO Empty flag = 0 (Buffer has data to be read) A frame is the unit of transmission in serial communications Start bit: To declare the start of transmission. Data bits: 4,5,6,7, or 8 bits of useful data bits. Parity bit : To check for transmission errors. Stop bit: To declare end of frame Parity bit is used to check the integrity of a frame and signal if an error occurred during transmission. It is an extra bit added to the end of a frame. Even parity :The number of ‘1’ symbols inside a frame must always be even. Odd parity : The number of ‘1’ symbols inside a frame must always be odd The configuration settings at both ends of Txd and Rxd: Full or half-duplex operation Data length Start/Stop bits Transmission speed. EX:-198 = 11000110 Transmission speed Common speed = 9600 bits/sec 1/9600 = 104 us. After detecting start it will count 104us and complets start bit. Then begins sampling the input bits after 52us with equal count of 104us between each bit untill the next stop bit with high pulse. Advantages Requires minimum wires No need for clock or any other timing signal. Parity bit ensures basic error checking. Disadvantages Size of the data in the frame is limited. Can connect only two devices at a time Speed for data transfer is less compared to parallel. Transmitter and receiver must agree to the rules of transmission and appropriate baud rate must be selected. if we are looking for a device to device serial communication then UART proves itself the best as it is easy to deal with and also widely used in many peripheral devices.

I²C (Inter-Integrated Circuit), pronounced I-squared-C, is a multi-master, multi-slave, single-ended, serial computer bus invented by Philips Semiconductor (now NXP Semiconductors). It is typically used for attaching lower-speed peripheral ICs to processors and microcontrollers. Alternatively I²C is spelled I2C (pronounced I-two-C) or IIC (pronounced I-I-C). Since October 10, 2006, no licensing fees are required to implement the I²C protocol. However, fees are still required to obtain I²C slave addresses allocated by NXP.[1] Several competitors, such as Siemens AG (later Infineon Technologies AG, now Intel mobile communications), NEC, Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics (formerly SGS-Thomson), Motorola (later Freescale), and Intersil, have introduced compatible I²C products to the market since the mid-1990s. SMBus, defined by Intel in 1995, is a subset of I²C that defines the protocols more strictly. One purpose of SMBus is to promote robustness and interoperability. Accordingly, modern I²C systems incorporate policies and rules from SMBus, sometimes supporting both I²C and SMBus, requiring only minimal reconfiguration. The Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus is a synchronous serial communication interface specification used for short distance communication, primarily in embedded systems. The interface was developed by Motorola and has become a de facto standard. Typical applications include sensors, Secure Digital cards, and liquid crystal displays. SPI devices communicate in full duplex mode using a master-slave architecture with a single master. The master device originates the frame for reading and writing. Multiple slave devices are supported through selection with individual slave select (SS) lines. Sometimes SPI is called a four-wire serial bus, contrasting with three-, two-, and one-wire serial buses. The SPI may be accurately described as a synchronous serial interface,[1] but it is different from the Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI) protocol, which is also a four-wire synchronous serial communication protocol, but employs differential signaling and provides only a single simplex communication channel.

SPI is a serial bus standard established by Motorola and supported in silicon products from various manufacturers. It is a synchronous serial data link that operates in full duplex (signals carrying data go in both directions simultaneously). Devices communicate using a master/slave relationship, in which the master initiates the data frame. When the master generates a clock and selects a slave device, data may be transferred in either or both directions simultaneously.

Abstract This paper describes the development of verification environment for AMBA AXI (Advanced Extensible Interface) protocol using System Verilog. AXI supports high performance, high-frequency system designs. It is an On-Chip communication protocol. It is suitable for high-bandwidth and high frequency designs with minimal delays. It provides flexibility in the implementation of interconnect architectures and avoid use of complex bridges. It is backward-compatible with existing AHB and APB interfaces. The key features of the AXI protocol are that it consists of separate address, control and data phases. It support unaligned data transfers using byte strobes. It requires only start address to be issued in a burst-based transaction. It has separate read and write data channels that provide low-cost Direct Memory Access (DMA). This paper is aimed at the verification of various burst type transaction (INCR and WRAP) of the AXI bus protocol and the Verification Environment is built using System Verilog coding[1]. The focus of this paper is on implementation of Inter Integrated Circuit (I2C) protocol following slave module for no data loss. In this paper, the principle and the operation of I2C bus protocol will be introduced. It follows the I2C specification to provide device addressing, read/write operation and an acknowledgement. The programmable nature of device provide users with the flexibility of configuring the I2C slave device to any legal slave address to avoid the slave address collision on an I2C bus with multiple slave devices. This paper demonstrates how I2C Master controller transmits and receives data to and from the Slave with proper synchronization. The module is designed in Verilog and simulated in ModelSim. The design is also synthesized in Xilinx XST 14.1. This module acts as a slave for the microprocessor which can be customized for no data loss.

ASIC Implementation of I2C Master bus controller with design of Firm IP core has been proposed in this paper. I2C is one the most prominent protocol used in on chip communication among sub-systems. The generic design of I2C master controller has ample of features to incorporate vast varieties of application and I2C standards. The generic design is slow, congested and require high power. It’s rare to utilize all the features of generic design fully in a single particular application or system. Hence, a modified ASIC design with specific less features but with better timing, low power requirement and less area overhead, has been proposed in this paper. This design is specifically apt for digital systems which have serial bus interface requirement for on board communication. Moreover, the Firm IP core of I2C Master Controller has been designed for ASIC, which makes the design highly portable on any ASIC chips or SOC designs. The firm IPs is best in terms of flexibility and more predictable than commonly found soft IPs. The entire custom ASIC implementation of proposed design has been done in Cadence Tool chain with 45nm technology using standard cell library. A thorough comparison has been done between generic open sourced RTL design of I2C Controller obtained from Opencores.org and our proposed design.

In most of the applications, the physical systems require a real-time operation to interface high speed constraints. In most of the applications, the physical systems require a real-time operation to interface high speed constraints. The Inter Integrated Circuits (I2C) is a 2-wireed communication bus. Physically, it consists of 2 active wires: SDA (Serial Data), SCL (Serial Clock) and a ground connection. All I2C-bus compatible devices incorporate an on-chip interface which allows them to communicate directly with each other via the I2C-bus. This paper focuses on the software implementation for I2C Driver and its interfacing with RAM. Specifically, this paper describes in detail an I2C Master connected to I 2C Slave using an I2C bus. The I2C protocol was given by Philips Semiconductors for faster devices to communicate with slower devices and each other without data loss. The complete module is designed in VHDL and simulated in Xilinx ISE 14.5.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
