Editor's Notes
We can move even one step forward to the highly flexible resource allocation model called shared services, Private Cloud, or Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) through virtualization.By combining virtualization and grid infrastructure, you can allocate HW, DBs, App Servers to new projects and departments instantly & flexibly according to the demand, and de-allocate immediately as they complete their tasks to free up the resources for the upcoming projects.Oracle provides the high performance virtualization software called Oracle Virtual Machine or Oracle VM with free of license cost. Oracle VM, Oracle Database and WebLogic Server work very well together with many integrated features for the fastest performance and better manageability. By reducing the virtualization license cost to 0 compare to the considerable amount of spending on VMWare licenses, and also reducing the HW & labor cost due to higher performance & management capabilities, your IT organization will save incredible amount of virtualization platform cost in a very short period of time. I’ll talk about Oracle VM a bit later.===========================================================Notes: http://www.oracle.com/us/technologies/virtualization/index.html
Managing IT in Cloud Computing means a change in orientation such that IT management is delivered as a global shared service delivering a shared infrastructure.Oracle’s grid computing and virtualization solution make it possible for you to manage the software lifecycle from the planning, development, test, go-live, operation, and maintenance all more efficient and easy to manage. It helps you to utilise the hardware & software resources to the maximum possible level through the unified platform and effective management tools, resulting in the cost reduction of the entire organization.
Why is consolidating on WebLogic a good idea for you? One of the reason is because WebLogic is the world’s #1 application server. According to Gartner’s most recent report, Oracle has the biggest share of 44%, and it’s higher than 4 closest competitors combined altogether. I’m not saying that you should go with WebLogic just because it’s the most popular product, but there are reasons and many positive implications to this fact.Being the #1 App Server in the market, WebLogic Server has more administrators and developers, information & community available. This means fewer cost & less time spent for you to hire administrators and developers because it’s easier to find them. And it also means that we can better support our customers than any other vendors with bigger user groups and partners to provide feedback to us to improve the quality of our WebLogic software. You can find supported third-party packaged applications more easily because ISVs and System Integrators build their applications on top of the most popular application server. It also means that it’s much less expensive to manage with full of information and great quality of support available.
Not just the #1 market share WebLogic holds, but many other factors prove that WebLogic is the best choice for you.First of all, I should mention that WebLogic Server is the fastest application server based on the SPECjEnterprise2010 Benchmark published during San Francisco Oracle Open World in September 2010. WebLogic Server 11g on new Oracle Sun SPARC T3 Server has shown the better performance than IBM WebSphere on Power7 Series. On top of that, since SPARC T3 Server is much cheaper than Power7 Series, you will spend much less on hardware to meet your business SLAs if you go with SPARC. It’s also the most reliable platform which can achieve 5 9’s, meaning 99.999% of availability. This calculates into 5 seconds downtime in one year which are usually the SLAs for the world’s most mission critical applications such as Financial, Banking, Stock Exchange, & Telco. We got the most complete set of management tools which help you to reduce the IT operational cost drastically. Of course, Oracle WebLogic has the best integration features with other best-of-breed Oracle products such as Oracle Database, Applications, and Sun hardware, leading us to the conclusion that we are the most complete platform for Private Cloud.
Now, I would like to introduce 2 success stories of Oracle customers to you.The first story is about a software provider of an event booking system.Parrimark Technology is a leading Australian developer of enterprise management software for organizations that manage event bookings. The company develops Events Perfect, an advanced software package that is used by governments, conference and exhibition facilities, catering and event companies, pubs and clubs, museums, stadiums, theme parks, theatres, and universities. Events Perfect is used by more than 500 customers in 12 countries. Parrimark has been operating for more than 10 years in London, England, and 40% of its customers are located in Europe. In 2007, Parrimark Technology realized it needed to take advantage of the emerging Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or on demand software delivery model if it was to expand into new markets such as South America, China, and India.Parrimark wanted to capture all the great functionality they had developed since their inception 14 years ago, and offer their customers the opportunity to purchase their hosted software online for a set fee. They needed an automated system that would enable them to reach as many of their customers as possible, and allow them to grow revenue at the lowest possible cost.In mid-2009, Parrimark began working with Oracle to develop a new hosted on-demand software delivery service using Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Database, which are key components of the Oracle Platform for SaaS or PaaS. Parrimark Technology’s new off-site on-demand service will be launched on March 1, 2011. It will enable customers worldwide to purchase hosted Events Perfect software from the company’s Web site for a monthly, quarterly, or annual licensing fee.Oracle’s WebLogic & Database consolidation solutions have helped them:Achieve the on-demand software service (SaaS) providing better solutions to their customers at a lower cost, which will result in higher earningsSupport their customers organize events 60% fasterReduce software licensing costs by 80%Save US$150,000 administration costs in the 1st year, US$210,000 in the 2nd yearEarn expected year-on-year revenue growth of up to 40% in 2011 compare to 20% in 2010You can see how Oracle’s consolidation solutions can reduce costs & complexities, and raise customer satisfaction & revenue in a short time.================================================Notes:Parrimark Technology Expects Annual Revenue Growth of 40%, Cuts Licensing Costs by 80%Company: Parrimark Technology, PDF | Published on December 15, 2010
The 2nd customer is Starhub who has successfully surpassed other Singaporean Telco vendors using Oracle’s consolidated platform. As a leader in Singapore’s competitive telecommunications industry, StarHub strives to outdo its competitors by providing premium yet affordable services with innovative and useful features—a key aspect of its strategy to build the StarHub brand. As part of its continuous self-assessment to enhance the customer experience, StarHub, Singapore’s fully-integrated info-communication company, identified several opportunities to improve its existing operations. The company needed faster time-to-market for new product rollouts through its distribution channel. It also wanted to simplify and accelerate service activation, and automate and streamline many paper-based processes. To support business objectives, StarHub created a common service framework (CSF) built on Oracle WebLogic. Using the CSF, StarHub can deploy new consumer offerings faster, activate services online, and update customers in real time. The framework, which was built in just five months, offers a scalable infrastructure that has enabled Starhub to register customers faster through electronic-based transactions. As a result, the customer satisfaction level has improved. Oracle’s WebLogic & SOA consolidation solutions have helped them:Expand their service offerings which generate US$1.38 billion annual revenue through over 1.76 million mobile subscribers, 504,000 cable TV households, & 246,000 cable broadband households supported by 2,770 employeesAllow customer service staff to immediately determine a customer’s eligibility for new servicesEmpower customers to self-manage accounts online and enjoy immediate access to new servicesProvide the ability to launch new services in multiple locationsImprove customer satisfactionThe key differentiators of Oracle’s SOA & WebLogic solution over other competitive solutions were strong Business Process Management capabilities; standards compliance; and proven reliability, accessibility, scalability, and performance. You can see how Oracle can help you to provide rapidly changing services adjusting to the market change to go beyond any other vendors in your industry.================================================Notes:StarHub Maintains Competitive Edge with Common IT Service FrameworkCompany: StarHub , PDF | Published on July 23, 2009 Others:Premium Wine Brands – PernodRicard and Private CloudCompany: Premium Wine Brands , HTM | Published on December 21, 2010 Premium Wine Brands Streamlines Process Automation, Reduces Cost of OwnershipCompany: Premium Wine Brands , PDF | Published on December 17, 2010 Other more SOA Centric Stories of Premium Wine Brands:Premium Wine Brands Uses SOA for Application Integration Company: Premium Wine Brands HTM | Published on December 16, 2010 Premium Wine Brands Pty Ltd Leverages SOA for Process Automation and Application Integration; increasing Return on Investment while Reducing Cost of OwnershipCompany: Premium Wines HTM | Published on December 14, 2010 Premium Wine Brands Pty Ltd Leverages SOA for Process Automation and Application Integration; increasing Return on Investment while Reducing Cost of OwnershipCompany: Premium Wine Brands Pty Ltd HTM | Published on December 14, 2010
From here, let’s look into how our successful customers resolve their business challenges by applying Oracle’s consolidation scenario. Most enterprises out there have highly heterogeneous datacenters with underutilized dedicated stacks beneath most applications. And both the heterogene-ity of the hardware and the complexity of the applications themselves—apps that in many cases consist of multiple components distributed across multiple servers—makes deployment highly inefficient and error-prone. And once the apps are deployed, scaling them is often difficult, involving addition of physical hardware to stacks and lengthy procurement cycles.
<After Quiz 1 & Poll 1>Thank you very much for participating in the poll. Now that I know what my audience is most concerned through the poll, I’ll navigate you through how you can resolve these complexity issues with 3 steps, 1: Standardization, 2: Consolidation, and 3: Virtualization.First, let’s reduce the complexities by standardizing your software infrastructure including OSs, DBs, & Applications. By standardizing your software infrastructure, you can reduce IT operational costs by only having to maintain much less number of common skill sets, knowledge, and practices.
WebLogic Server 11g represents a phenomenal 12-month development exercise in converging the world’s leading application server technologies, BEA WebLogic & Oracle Internet Application Server. This is the best platform of choice for any IT standardization projects. Let’s look at this in more detail. At a macro level, the converged container includes modules from both roots, such as WebLogic Server’s clustering and OC4J’s RAC integration and diagnostics capabilities. On top of that, WebLogic Server is certified with the rest of the Oracle middleware stack, and WebLogic Server 11g includes the OC4J support for Forms, Reports, Portal, etc. as well as SOA, BPM, WebCenter, Identity Management, and so on. This is the platform of choice for both custom apps and packaged apps; in particular it is the platform for the forthcoming Oracle Fusion Applications.
To even further move into a more simpler world from standardization, we can execute step 2: Consolidation. This step enables us not just the software stack standardization but on top of that, further lets us stretch into hardware consolidation.Consolidation to a standardized infrastructure, both in terms of hardware and foundational software such as operating systems and application servers alleviates some of the pains. Having a consistent templatized or “cookie-cutter” infra building block allows IT shops to streamline deployment and scaling processes, reducing errors, and allowing streamlined operational activities such as patching and updating. You still have lots of manual labor as well as underutilization of HW, though.
For WebLogic Suite 11g, we’ve rolled out a host of new management features under the moniker “real operations”. We’ve grouped these into two categories, Real Operations Automation (the top red boxes), which refers to enabling mechanisms in WebLogic Server itself that plug into and are controlled by Enterprise Manager, and Real Operations Insight (the bottom gray boxes), which refers to metrics sent from the various WebLogic Suite components into Enterprise Manager for visualization and as inputs to automation. In the first category we have domain templates, WebLogic Server scripting, the clustering mechanism, and the deployment mechanism. A big plus in 11g is the ability to manage WebLogic Server across domains. In the Real Operations Insight area in the bottom half, we have fine-grained monitoring, aggregation of data into single screens with effective visualization, capabilities specific to diagnosing faults. We’ll delve into our great management features a bit later.
As a final step after step 1, standardization and step 2, consolidation, we can enable the agile resource assignments by virtualizing our environment.Virtualization on top of consolidated infrastructure takes the game to a new level. The most obvious benefit is higher utilization—you can run many more apps on a given number of physical servers thanks to thehypervisor virtualization server which turns a singlephysical server into multiple virtual server. But probably even more important is the ability to quickly deploy and move things around on virtual infrastructure. By packaging configured app stacks including middleware and OS into appliance-like “virtual machine images”, you can nearly instantly bring up an app on a virtual server and later move it or expand it to other servers without any physical reboots or even having to restart the application. It empowers you with the shared service Private Cloud dynamics.
Oracle’s latest management tool for the virtualized environment is Virtual Assembly Builder or VAB. VAB enables application-aware virtualization to package multiple physical or virtual deployments of software components into collections of software appliances in virtual images. Using VAB, you can view and manage the components within the virtual image without starting the image. You can view a catalog of what’s inside, and you can inspect & change properties assigned to the deployed software. You can pick & choose what should be included and what should be deleted by controling from outside the virtual image without actually starting them, as Oracle VM is aware of what kind of products, which versions with which patches are included. This will in result simplify the provisioning & reduce configuration errors. It also enables greater uniformity across multiple environments such as multiple clustered nodes or multiple Non-Production Environments and a Production Environment. As a result, it will accelerate deployment of new infrastructures and applications by a single-step template based approach.
I hear a lot from my customers that they are struggling to raise the customer satisfaction level. Their customers call their Call Center to report a user-unfriendly error they see after pressing the “Submit Order” button. They are not sure if the order went through or they have to place the same order again. The customer says “what’s going on with my order? I got an error message when I pressed the “Submit Order” button.”When a certain customer reports such issue, it’s usually impossible to track a single lost purchase order within the integrated environments involving multiple different applications even if all services are up and running 100%.BTM lets you monitor an individual purchase order spanning across many different backend systems, could they be Online Banking Java-based custom application, Telco Self-Service third-party application, or anything. You don’t need to change any application code. You just simply install light-weight agents and agents pick up all necessary services and integrations from the complex environment. BTM can track where the particular purchase order failed or took too long to be processed. BTM can monitor SLAs and warn administrators when it’s getting close to violate. As a result, you can identify the root cause of any lost purchase orders, achieve higher customer satisfaction, & generate more revenue. You can also reduce the cost by utilising the simplified monitoring solution.Let’s look at a couple of BTM screen captures which can describe how to track lost purchase order in more business-oriented user-friendly way.
With BTM, you can see where the bottleneck is within a single transaction and drill down to find out the root cause of the issue which could reside at anywhere in the integrated apps. In this screen shot, the Order Service is taking 60 ms which is much longer than the expected service level of, for instance 2 ms. BTM can monitor the warning & alert level of any business or technical SLAs in fixed durations or according to the diviation from the norm of the tranasctions which makes it easier to specify SLAs in more flexible manner. If the service level is unsatisfactory, BTM can alert administrators even before the customer rings the Call Center. Because of the BTM proactive monitoring, you can identify issues and causes in no time. As soon as you identify the cause, for example the specific third-party application or the integration between particular 2 systems with incompatible parameter values, you can fix the issue immediately and reduce the number of customers who will experience the issue there in the future.
With BTM, you can see the details of transactions spanning across multiple systems in business and user friendly terms. This means, if a customer rings and tells the Call Center agent that the page returned some errors after pressing the “Submit Order” button, you can track what’s going on with the customer’s transaction based on the info the customer gives you.For example, “My email address is such and such….” and you can search by the given email address and check if the order has been through or is stuck at a certain component in the integrated environment.Even if the services are up and running, it’s usually quite impossible to monitor if a single order request has failed or not and how it failed. BTM unbelievably makes it possible. The customer satisfaction will go up by identifying the status of the order which seems to have failed. After finding the root cause of the request failure, IT department can immediately rectify the issue relevant to a specific component such as the in-house custom application or the partner service or some integration code in between. The business organizations finally start feeling that the IT department is talking in the business language but not technical jergon if IT people can say “20 order requests have failed due to the obsolete integration between our Order Management System and the partner’s credit card verification service after the partner’s interface has changed” rather than “the application server has been up and running 100% today and we processed 20,000 DB transactions. I’m not sure why 20 customers have called us and reported some issues.”I can show you a private demo of WebLogic management features at a later stage if you like.
Let me delve into the Oracle’s enterprise consolidation strategy here.Conventionally, only about 5% of the IT cost is usually spent on software, about 20 - 30% on hardware, and the most expensive thing is people which could be about 40 - 50%. The human resources are spent to carry out projects, configure/develop/deploy new applications & integrations, maintain those integrated systems, or on expensive consulting service fees. If you don’t have to spend human resources for configuration and integration of heterogeneous systems, you will instantly save huge labor bills. That’s why it makes sense to choose Exadata, our high performance Database solution with well-engineered combination of software and hardware, and Exalogic, Oracle’s highly optimised middleware solution. With our highly-tuned machines, you can easily meet the growing performance and scalability demands while keeping deployment and operation simple and tractable. We started implementing this idea a few years ago with the first version of the Exadata Database Machine. With the acquisition of Sun last year and the addition of hardware to Oracle’s own product portfolio, we amplified our investment and commitment to this path with the second version of Exadata. And now, the star player of this presentation, we take what Exadata did for the database and do it again for middleware applications.
So on the heels of the immense success we’re having with Exadata, on Dec 8th of last year, we’ve launched a sister machine for the other half of the application—the middleware and unique business logic that are the essential structure of the application. You run and manage your business data on Exadata, and you run and manage your business logic on Exalogic. As an overall solution and in comparison with alternative approaches, here is the core value proposition. First, this system is extremely high performance, particularly for Java applications, where we’ve accelerated by as much as 10x in our labs.Second, make no bones about it, this is a system designed for mission-critical operations. There is no single point of failure—there is redundancy everywhere, and there is appropriate isolation such that you can truly consolidate numerous, disparate, mission-critical, production applications on this box without compromising reliability & security, and in most cases significantly improve them. Another aspect of the mission-critical point here is the notion of elasticity in the very name of Exalogic—this system is fundamentally designed to be able to support load spikes by adjusting resource allocation, thus maintaining mission-critical SLAs.Finally, the notion of an engineered system translates into at least two important points for your business—speed and efficiency, both in the initial set-up and in the ongoing operation of your applications.
And of course, software is the other half of the ‘engineered system’ story. The black boxes represents HW & OS.It’s preassembled, pre-loaded with the OS of your choice, Oracle Linux or Solaris, and it’s ready to run - unpack, wheel it in, plug in the network and power and you’re ready to go.The red boxed are WebLogic related software.Exalogic includes WebLogic Suite which includes WebLogic Server, in-memory grid caching Coherence, JRockit JVM & another option Sun HotSpot JVM.Exalogic Elastic Cloud is what enables the flexible allocation and high performance. You can add Tuxedo as part of the Exalogic solution if you need to re-host Mainframe COBOL applications as well. And, we have OEM Grid Control & Ops Center to manage software & hardware respectively. We also have a skilled service team to do the installation for you quickly.===========================================================Notes: We have a full 42U rack, a half-rack, and a quarter-rack as your options. Black boxes represent the physical machine (that thing, the thing you see)Preassembled machine 19” 42U RackPre-loaded with Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux (customer chooses)Ready to run – unpack, wheel it in, plug in the network and power and you’re ready to goWe have a services team to do the installation for you (if you want)Red Boxes: Optimized Java StackThese are the core components in WL SuiteMany changes have been made under the covers to improve performance in this environmentThe machine was spec’d and designed for this Java stack, and this Java Stack was tuned for this machineThey are closely coupled and complimentaryManagement from Application Level to Disk/Hardware level with Enterprise Manager
Let’s reiterate the notion of Exalogic as a consolidation platform. It is tuned for an incredibly diverse range of applications, the idea being that you can truly migrate nearly anything in your data center to this platform with no modification.
So imagine having your entire datacenter running on Exalogic. Here are some benefits. It’s highly-tuned integrated stack. Exalogic is cost effective & high performance. It scales on demand, achieves rapid application deployment and less-costly integrated management. With Exadata & Exalogic Elastic Cloud, hardware & software engineered solution, you can reduce the labor cost drastically from what you usually spend, as I mentioned earlier, normally 40 - 50% of your IT budget. You can possibly reduce millions of dollars spent on daily routine operations, and utilise your valuable human resources for more creative & productive projects. It will raise the IT employee job satisfaction level as well.Let’s take one more poll here before my last slide.<Poll 2 will come after this slide>
<After finishing the Poll 2>Thank you very much for participating in the poll. Let me just conclude my presentation with one last slide. Not only is there an evolution in the consolidation-to-virtualization-to-cloud sense, but we see an evolution within the cloud paradigm itself. That evolution is essentially to move up the stack. Early cloud like Amazon EC2 is “Infrastructure as a Service”. You login over the Web and get the proverbial flashing cursor of the operating system prompt and have to build up everything from there. What we see happening, particularly within enterprises in private cloud settings but also in public cloud settings is a progression up the stack, as more platform-level components are provided by the cloud to create a true “Platform as a Service” or “Software as a Service”. The level of abstraction at which you set up your application on the cloud is higher and therefore simpler, faster to deploy, and easier to maintain. Yes you trade off some flexibility, but as the industry figures out the right things to componentize and put them into the platforms, you find that more and more of what you need is there, and you find fewer things you wish or need to build custom, outside of what the platform offers.Let me check some questions raised from you at this point.Q1) I would like to get more details about the Parrimark Technology’s case. Possibly talk to them to find out how they implemented the SaaS solution.A1) Of course, we can get you more details and will try to connect you to Parrimark. Let me speak to you how to proceed after the webcast.Q2) What’s the support structure of Oracle VM?A2) That’s a good question that I didn’t cover in the presentation. Oracle provides first-class support for Oracle VM with the standard support cost model. I can get back to you with more details later.Q3) I still don’t see the difference between SaaS, PaaS, & IaaS. Can you explain a bit further?A3) That’s a good question as well, which wasn’t covered in the webcast today into details. This will be another big discussion, so let me take it offline and explain to you, or get your local technical experts speak to you after the webcast.I’ve got many more questions that I can’t cover during the session. Let me engage my local technical counterparts to contact you shortly. If you have any questions now, please shoot them through the Q & A tab, and we’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible.Through today’s webcast, I hope you can visualise the bright future of your IT infrastructure going Private Cloud by standardizing, consolidating, and virtualizing via Oracle’s WebLogic solutions. Let’s take a first step by consulting with your Oracle experts to see how to overcome your business challenges and turn them into advantages for your business acceleration. This concludes today’s webcast.
