- From here, let’s look into how our successful customers resolve their business challenges by applying Oracle’s consolidation scenario.Most enterprises out there have highly heterogeneous datacenters with underutilized dedicated stacks beneath most applications. And both the heterogene-ity of the hardware and the complexity of the applications themselves—apps that in many cases consist of multiple components distributed across multiple servers—makes deployment highly inefficient and error-prone. And once the apps are deployed, scaling them is often difficult, involving addition of physical hardware to stacks and lengthy procurement cycles.
- <After Quiz 1 & Poll 1>Thank you very much for participating in the poll.Now that I know what my audience is most concerned through the poll, I’ll navigate you through how you can resolve these complexity issues with 3 steps, 1: Standardization, 2: Consolidation, and 3: Virtualization.First, let’s reduce the complexities by standardizing your software infrastructure including OSs, DBs, & Applications. By standardizing your software infrastructure, you can reduce IT operational costs by only having to maintain much less number of common skill sets, knowledge, and practices.
- WebLogic Server 11g represents a phenomenal 12-month development exercise in converging the world’s leading application server technologies, BEA WebLogic & Oracle Internet Application Server. This is the best platform of choice for any IT standardization projects. Let’s look at this in more detail.At a macro level, the converged container includes modules from both roots, such as WebLogic Server’s clustering and OC4J’s RAC integration and diagnostics capabilities. On top of that, WebLogic Server is certified with the rest of the Oracle middleware stack, and WebLogic Server 11g includes the OC4J support for Forms, Reports, Portal, etc. as well as SOA, BPM, WebCenter, Identity Management, and so on. This is the platform of choice for both custom apps and packaged apps; in particular it is the platform for the forthcoming Oracle Fusion Applications.
- To even further move into a more simpler world from standardization, we can execute step 2: Consolidation. This step enables us not just the software stack standardization but on top of that, further lets us stretch into hardware consolidation.Consolidation to a standardized infrastructure, both in terms of hardware and foundational software such as operating systems and application servers alleviates some of the pains. Having a consistent templatized or “cookie-cutter” infra building block allows IT shops to streamline deployment and scaling processes, reducing errors, and allowing streamlined operational activities such as patching and updating. You still have lots of manual labor as well as underutilization of HW, though.
- For WebLogic Suite 11g, we’ve rolled out a host of new management features under the moniker “real operations”. We’ve grouped these into two categories, Real Operations Automation (the top red boxes), which refers to enabling mechanisms in WebLogic Server itself that plug into and are controlled by Enterprise Manager, and Real Operations Insight (the bottom gray boxes), which refers to metrics sent from the various WebLogic Suite components into Enterprise Manager for visualization and as inputs to automation. In the first category we have domain templates, WebLogic Server scripting, the clustering mechanism, and the deployment mechanism. A big plus in 11g is the ability to manage WebLogic Server across domains.In the Real Operations Insight area in the bottom half, we have fine-grained monitoring, aggregation of data into single screens with effective visualization, capabilities specific to diagnosing faults. We’ll delve into our great management features a bit later.
- As a final step after step 1, standardization and step 2, consolidation, we can enable the agile resource assignments by virtualizing our environment.Virtualization on top of consolidated infrastructure takes the game to a new level. The most obvious benefit is higher utilization—you can run many more apps on a given number of physical servers thanks to thehypervisor virtualization server which turns a singlephysical server into multiple virtual server.But probably even more important is the ability to quickly deploy and move things around on virtual infrastructure. By packaging configured app stacks including middleware and OS into appliance-like “virtual machine images”, you can nearly instantly bring up an app on a virtual server and later move it or expand it to other servers without any physical reboots or even having to restart the application. It empowers you with the shared service Private Cloud dynamics.
- Oracle’s latest management tool for the virtualized environment is Virtual Assembly Builder or VAB. VAB enables application-aware virtualization to package multiple physical or virtual deployments of software components into collections of software appliances in virtual images. Using VAB, you can view and manage the components within the virtual image without starting the image. You can view a catalog of what’s inside, and you can inspect & change properties assigned to the deployed software. You can pick & choose what should be included and what should be deleted by controling from outside the virtual image without actually starting them, as Oracle VM is aware of what kind of products, which versions with which patches are included. This will in result simplify the provisioning & reduce configuration errors. It also enables greater uniformity across multiple environments such as multiple clustered nodes or multiple Non-Production Environments and a Production Environment. As a result, it will accelerate deployment of new infrastructures and applications by a single-step template based approach.
- I hear a lot from my customers that they are struggling to raise the customer satisfaction level. Their customers call their Call Center to report a user-unfriendly error they see after pressing the “Submit Order” button. They are not sure if the order went through or they have to place the same order again. The customer says “what’s going on with my order? I got an error message when I pressed the “Submit Order” button.”When a certain customer reports such issue, it’s usually impossible to track a single lost purchase order within the integrated environments involving multiple different applications even if all services are up and running 100%.BTM lets you monitor an individual purchase order spanning across many different backend systems, could they be Online Banking Java-based custom application, Telco Self-Service third-party application, or anything. You don’t need to change any application code. You just simply install light-weight agents and agents pick up all necessary services and integrations from the complex environment. BTM can track where the particular purchase order failed or took too long to be processed. BTM can monitor SLAs and warn administrators when it’s getting close to violate. As a result, you can identify the root cause of any lost purchase orders, achieve higher customer satisfaction, & generate more revenue. You can also reduce the cost by utilising the simplified monitoring solution.Let’s look at a couple of BTM screen captures which can describe how to track lost purchase order in more business-oriented user-friendly way.
- With BTM, you can see where the bottleneck is within a single transaction and drill down to find out the root cause of the issue which could reside at anywhere in the integrated apps. In this screen shot, the Order Service is taking 60 ms which is much longer than the expected service level of, for instance 2 ms. BTM can monitor the warning & alert level of any business or technical SLAs in fixed durations or according to the diviation from the norm of the tranasctions which makes it easier to specify SLAs in more flexible manner. If the service level is unsatisfactory, BTM can alert administrators even before the customer rings the Call Center. Because of the BTM proactive monitoring, you can identify issues and causes in no time. As soon as you identify the cause, for example the specific third-party application or the integration between particular 2 systems with incompatible parameter values, you can fix the issue immediately and reduce the number of customers who will experience the issue there in the future.
- With BTM, you can see the details of transactions spanning across multiple systems in business and user friendly terms.This means, if a customer rings and tells the Call Center agent that the page returned some errors after pressing the “Submit Order” button, you can track what’s going on with the customer’s transaction based on the info the customer gives you.For example, “My email address is such and such….” and you can search by the given email address and check if the order has been through or is stuck at a certain component in the integrated environment.Even if the services are up and running, it’s usually quite impossible to monitor if a single order request has failed or not and how it failed. BTM unbelievably makes it possible. The customer satisfaction will go up by identifying the status of the order which seems to have failed. After finding the root cause of the request failure, IT department can immediately rectify the issue relevant to a specific component such as the in-house custom application or the partner service or some integration code in between. The business organizations finally start feeling that the IT department is talking in the business language but not technical jergon if IT people can say “20 order requests have failed due to the obsolete integration between our Order Management System and the partner’s credit card verification service after the partner’s interface has changed” rather than “the application server has been up and running 100% today and we processed 20,000 DB transactions. I’m not sure why 20 customers have called us and reported some issues.”I can show you a private demo of WebLogic management features at a later stage if you like.

Let me just conclude my presentation with one last slide.Not only is there an evolution in the consolidation-to-virtualization-to-cloud sense, but we see an evolution within the cloud paradigm itself. That evolution is essentially to move up the stack. Early cloud like Amazon EC2 is “Infrastructure as a Service”. You login over the Web and get the proverbial flashing cursor of the operating system prompt and have to build up everything from there. What we see happening, particularly within enterprises in private cloud settings but also in public cloud settings is a progression up the stack, as more platform-level components are provided by the cloud to create a true “Platform as a Service” or “Software as a Service”. The level of abstraction at which you set up your application on the cloud is higher and therefore simpler, faster to deploy, and easier to maintain. Yes you trade off some flexibility, but as the industry figures out the right things to componentize and put them into the platforms, you find that more and more of what you need is there, and you find fewer things you wish or need to build custom, outside of what the platform offers.Let me check some questions raised from you at this point.Q1) I would like to get more details about the Parrimark Technology’s case.
