Exercise: A Prescription for Vitality
Sharyn Pak Withers, Workshop Leader
F
ew factors contribute as much to vital aging as an active lifestyle. Research
indicates that even moderate amounts of aerobic exercise not only improve
physical well-being, but also promote neuronal growth in the brain. This
program teaches participants about the nature of movement and provides pain-
free ways to strengthen the body. Each 90-minute session covers issues of fitness
and aging and also serves as an exercise class. Sharyn Pak Withers introduces
fun new exercises that can help improve and prolong your life. You’ll leave this
workshop with a personal exercise routine specific to your fitness level. Among
previous participants, 90% demonstrated improvement in eight specific
areas of strength and endurance.
Course includes an exclusive DVD with all workshop exercises. Please wear
comfortable clothing.

Life Changes:
Creating New Passion, Meaning & Purpose
Paul Hilt, Workshop Leader
A
s we age, change is inevitable. Our children leave the nest. We spend a
lifetime working and then face retirement or semi-retirement. Personal
changes can force us to rethink who we are and what we genuinely
want. This program takes you through a series of practical activities to help you
choose how to live passionately and meaningfully in the next stage of life. Active
discussion with Paul Hilt and like-minded participants provides down-to-earth
support, perspective and guidance. The end result: increased clarity about the
path ahead and focus on the next steps. As one Friends Life Care member said,
“This is the best six hours I’ve ever spent in a course.”
Course includes a book and online strengths assessment. Optional one-to-one
coaching is available for an additional fee after the course ends.
Paul Hilt is the founder of Hilt & Associates, a coaching and
training firm that specializes in helping individuals transition
from full-time careers to retirement. Through his research, he has
identified five non-financial challenges people face during this
transition and has developed a set of strategies to overcome them.
Hilt leads his popular workshops for many audiences, including
the clients of firms such as Marshall Financial Group and the employees of
corporations like Aramark and Citizens Bank.

The Anti-Inflammatory Foods Fix
Carmel Rickenbach, Workshop Leader
W
hat is the anti-inflammatory diet? What is all the fuss about gluten-
free foods? Explore the answers to these and other questions in this
three-part workshop on nutrition and health.
Increasing evidence shows that chronic inflammation may be the underlying
cause of many serious illnesses once associated with aging, including cancer,
Alzheimer’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), rheumatoid arthritis and
many other conditions. Inflammation shows up on the skin as localized redness,
swelling and heat. They are signs that the immune system is functioning
properly to fight injury or infection. But internal inflammation that persists or
serves no purpose can damage the body and promote disease instead of healing.
Carmel Rickenbach explains inflammation’s common causes and risk factors,
discusses the connection between the brain and the gastrointestinal system and
its relationship to normal immunity, and offers practical dietary changes that can
help prevent inflammation and encourage healthy living.
Carmel Rickenbach, MS, RD, LDN, is a private-practice dietitian
with more than 25 years of experience. She has developed numerous
corporate wellness programs and has taught at the college level. She
served as director of nutrition services for a prominent health care
company and wrote the health column “Sound Bites” for several
newspapers. The Pennsylvania Dietetic Association named her
Emerging Dietitian of the Year. Rickenbach earned her master’s degree in
nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and completed her dietetic internship
at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

Improving Sleep for Better Health
Michael Grandner, Workshop Leader
S
leep is as crucial to overall health and longevity as physical activity and
good nutrition, yet millions of Americans forgo sufficient sleep or suffer
from problems that prevent them from obtaining it. Left untreated, sleep
problems can take a serious toll on health and significantly reduce quality of life.
In this participatory three-session workshop, Michael Grandner introduces the
science of sleep, separates truth from myth, reviews common sleep issues and
disorders, and provides individualized consultation and tips for improvement.
Participants keep a sleep diary during the course, which helps inform
and guide the discussion. They receive a detailed interpretation of their
personal sleep habits at the end of the program.
To get the most benefit, participants are asked to complete and submit a personal sleep
assessment one week prior to the start date. Please register sufficiently in advance.
Michael Grandner, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of
Pennsylvania Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology.
Grandner studies the way sleep and sleep-related behaviors relate to
longevity, mental health, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular
disease. He is an active member of the American Academy of Sleep
Medicine, the Sleep Research Society, the Society for Behavioral
Sleep Medicine and the Pennsylvania Sleep Society, for which he serves on the
board of directors. Many of his papers have been published in peer-reviewed
scientific journals.

acuity and maintain a healthy brain throughout life. At the end of the session,
participants have an opportunity to share their own personal techniques for
aiding or enhancing memory.
Barbara Malamut, PhD, is a licensed psychologist. She has
