4. Our unit last term gave us
something of a background to
our scriptures
Now it’s our turn to take this
further to get a bit of an
understanding of some
elements of our beliefs as
Christians
5. We’re going to break this
into four manageable bits;
each of these will have a
different focus but
hopefully will help in our
exploration of this topic.
So what are we going to
look at in this unit?
7. God started by
revealing himself
to the people of
Israel and we see
this more fully
expressed through
the person of
Jesus
8. God in the world
Each of us
experiences the
world in different
ways
So as a consequence we
each experience God
through his creation in
different ways
We’re going to try to
explore
how some of these
revelations have been
expressed through
the language
of the scriptures
9. World Religions
We have
already been
looking at Judaism
and Christianity.
Now we want to
take a look at the
other World
Religions
and explore
each tradition’s
understanding of
the idea of God.
We have called this unit: POST HOC, ERGO PROPTER HOC. This is a Latin phrase which means “after this, therefore because of this”. Really what it’s saying is that we often say that things happen because of something that happened before. That’s a bit complicated but we have applied that things happen because of something that happened before. That’s a bit complicated but we have applied that idea to this study of beliefs.
We come to understand and appreciate our beliefs as Christians – and Catholics more explicitly – from our reading, and prayerful reflection on our scriptures.

The first section is called: God’s Revelation – that is, looking at how God has revealed himself to us. God started by revealing himself to the people of Israel and we see this more fully expressed through the person of Jesus.
The second section focuses on God in the world. Each of us experiences the world in different ways. So as a consequence we each experience God through his creation in different ways. We’re going to try to explore how some of these revelations have been expressed through the language of the scriptures.
The third section begins to explore the four other World Religions: Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism. We have already been looking at Judaism and Christianity. Now we want to take a look at the other World Religions and explore the each tradition’s understanding of the idea of God.
We will finish with a consideration of the founding figures and their importance within each of their own traditions.
