Reveals
Certain chronic diseases such as diabetes,
heart disease, stroke, and even osteoporosis
may be linked to the fetal stage of
development, a new theory states. According
to David Barker, a British physician and
epidemiologist, aside from genetic and
lifestyle factors, developing conditions for the
fetus in the womb and placenta also influence
the development and risk of chronic diseases
for infants.
Barker believes that during the crucial time of development — from the
day of conception to the age of two years old — the body’s organ’s and
systems are extremely sensitive to conditions in their environment.
When a fetus is faced with poor food supply, nutrients are focused to the
brain instead of other organs which are deprived of nutrients for
development and could possibly lead to problems and diseases later in
life.
As a theory, Barker’s hypothesis is considered unproven but it does
reinforce basic principles of following a healthy lifestyle throughout
someone’s life in order to promote a healthy pregnancy. It might also
lead to the prevention of future chronic diseases such as osteoporosis
and complications from disease treatments like Fosamax-related
osteonecrosis of the jaw that has triggered legal controversy.
