Using the talks (Extract “How to Present Safety Talks”):
Plan which topic you want to discuss with your team.
Read through the script before you hold the meeting to
familiarise yourself with the material.
Start the talk with a comment that makes the topic relevant to
the team. For example, if you have seen a number of people
using ladders incorrectly, use this as your opening comment.
Follow the script but don’t read straight from the page. The
script is only a prompt and it will sound better if you use your
own words.
Ask the questions as they appear in the script. It is important
you do this because they are a lead in to the next section of
your talk.
Give the team enough time to answer the questions. Safety
talks can be boring for the team if you are the only one talking.
Hand out the information sheets as they appear in the script.
Don’t hand out all the information sheets at the start of the talk
otherwise there is a temptation for the team to read ahead and
not listen to the points you are making.
Collect the information sheets at the end of the talk so they
can be used again.

TYPES OF POLLUTION
There are seven general categories of pollution.
“Two examples of pollution are noise and ground pollution. Can

There are seven general groupings of pollution. They are:
noise, which is any undesired sound around the areas of work;
waste, which is any scrap material, effluent or unwanted substance that needs to be disposed of;
ground pollution, which is any spillage or contamination of the ground in the work area;
water pollution, which is caused by allowing poisonous, noxious or polluting matter into
waterways or ground water;
air pollution, which is any dust, gas, fume, smoke, vapor, smog or spray within the work area;
nuisance, which can be any act or omission that affects the comfort or quality of life; and
vibration, which is caused by using plant and equipment that may damage structures, buildings
or natural formations.
We can also have a major impact on our work area environment. The company can design structures,
methods and procedures to control identified pollutants but unless we report deviations, non-
conformance, damage and failure to follow the procedures, significant environmental damage can occur.
STEPS TOWARDS PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT
There are a number of ways we can control pollutants.

Preventing pollution requires us to reduce or eliminate the wastes generated from our work. Prevention
methods include:
source reduction - for example, reducing solvent use, extending service intervals etc.;
recycling - re-treating products such as truck diesel engine oil, so it can be used in a power
station;
treatment - such as precipitating heavy metal from a spent chrome plating bath;
disposal - storing and disposing of hazardous chemicals and materials correctly.
Let’s look at each type of pollution and review the ways we can prevent pollution.
NOISE POLLUTION
Noise pollution is generated by the equipment and tools we use to perform our work.

contaminated ground water;
permanent changes to the surrounding countryside as wind and rain erodes cleared areas;
loss of materials;
personal injuries; and
increased operating costs.
WATER POLLUTION
We all need to protect our natural water sources such as rivers, streams and underground water
reserves, from silting, erosion or pollution.

Some of the ways poisonous, noxious or polluting matter can enter the water sources are:
spillage from wash down areas;
drainage from wet concrete;
washing out concrete or grout from mixers;
leakage from oil storage facilities;
damage to underground oil pipes;
fuel and chemical spillage from transport or storage; and
portable ablution facilities not being connected to a controlled disposal system.
Always stay alert to the possibility of spillage from the work you are performing. Immediately report any
spillage which you cannot safely clean up.
AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution, which is any dust, gas, fume, smoke, vapour, smog or spray will travel a considerable
distance on the prevailing winds.

Some possible consequences of air pollution are:
short and long term respiratory problems;
contamination of crops which can then enter the food chain;
smoke and smog that can reduce visibility and cause accidents; and
certain acidic steams and gases which will attack and corrode structures.

SUMMARY
Today we have looked at how planning our work and understanding our actions can benefit the
environment.
We have identified the seven general groupings of pollution that can adversely affect the environment:
noise - any undesired sound around the areas of work;
waste - any scrap material, effluent or unwanted substance that is to be disposed off;
ground pollution - any spillage on, or contamination of, the ground in the work area;
water pollution - any poisonous, noxious or polluting matter getting into waterways or ground
water:
air pollution - any dust, gas, fume, smoke, vapor, smog or spray within the work area;
nuisance - an act or omission that affects the comfort or quality of life; and
vibration - caused by plant and equipment that may damage structures, buildings or natural
formations.
We have looked at how we can reduce the risk of contamination by applying:
source reduction - (reducing solvent use, extending service intervals etc.)
recycling - (re-treating truck diesel engine oil, for example, for use in a power station, re-using
equipment in alternative applications);
treatment - (precipitation of heavy metal from a spent chrome plating bath); and
disposal - (storing and disposing of hazardous chemicals or materials in the correct way).
