whether they are rich or poor. The martial Arts
include Kung Fu, Karate, Tae kwon do and Judo.

Begin?
The martial arts started by sitting still. People
have been practicing fighting skills for thousands
of years. Some tomb walls in Asia show people
practicing Martial Arts. Some martial arts were
created in China by an Indian monk named
Bodhidharma . He created it because in China he
observed that the Chinese monks were being too
lazy and not getting work done.

To many of us, martial arts is fighting and
violence. But that is not the case. Martial Arts is
about training and working and showing your best
and doing your best.
It is also about being confident in your abilities.

6. Zen Buddhism
Bhodhidharma’s teachings started a knew type of
Buddhism.
This was what they called Zen and in China it is
known as Chan. Zen shaped the way people
thought and practiced the martial arts.
7. 空手道 ( Karate )
• Weapons were outlawed in Okinawa in 1480 by King
Sho Shin. He was a Buddhist who rejected violence.
When the Japanese conquered Okinawa in 1609,
they made it illegal for citizens to practice martial arts.
So the citizens of Okinawa practiced secretly. The
system they had learned from the Chinese became
known as karate. Karate is the only martial art that
doesn’t involve weapons. A long time ago it was
called “kata”.
