- Our vision as been our ambition since 5 years and is now about to materialise
- Our vision has a name, the Archivator, that is the result of a 3 year EU funded R&D project
- And what is our vision? Ref. slideData preservation and storage for long term means a lot of problems related to migration, risk of data corruption and loss as well as unpredictable cost over time – we intended to eliminate these problems!
- That is why we put our bet on using a well trusted preservation and storage medium that has carried data for more than 130 years
- But now taken in use as a truly digital preservation and storage medium through our data processing and digital imaging technology developed over the last 10 years
- This is our “DREAM” and vision for a turnkey solution for ingest, preservation, storage, retrieval and access to valuable information – in the form of any kind of digital data.Left section is the ingest, recording and verification stagesCentre is the physical storage sectionRight is the retrieval and access section
- The system has 2 x 10 GïgaBit Ethernet interfaces to take any kind of data at the speed of IT
- Streaming and recording digital data onto the photosensitive medium
- It works just like a networked attached printer
- And when the reel has been recorded
- It goes into the photochemical process section
- Processing will be fully automated and controlled
- And operating at the same speed as the datarecorder
- Upon completion of the processing…
- The data goes into a datascanner…
- … for immediate verification and quality control.
- The format used to read the data from the film is based on open source software and non-proprietary software/algorithms.
- After successful verification the data reel goes into newly developed polymer composite materials that is made into a data cartridge that has the same longevity as the preservation medium, 500 years, and that does not affect the preservation medium in any negative manner.
- The data cartridge is then sent on into an automated robotic data warehouse
- This data warehouse is extremely space efficient and provides a very high level of security as well as fast access
- With intelligent robots doing all the work of finding the right cartridge within a few minutes.No materials used in the data warehouse affects the preservation medium in any negative manner
- So when the user is doing a METADATA search, finding a set of relevant data, - these data will be requested from the Archivator…
- … and the right data cartridges will be presented into the RETRIEVING section
- Where the reel is mounted on the data scanner
- … and the scanner advances to the correct file, and retrieves them
- … so that the requested files will be uploaded to the user.Time to get any reel from any location in the data warehouse to the retrieval section is 3-5 min. First file from a search can be is on its way back to the data owner in less than 6-8 min.
- The Archivator is “the ultimate digital insurance” for those valuable data that you cannot afford to loose, a true “disaster recovery copy”.So the Archivator is not a normal “back-up” of your online data.The Archivator is what the National Archives of India refers to as a “Trustworthy Digital Repository”
- The Archivator is extremely cost efficient over time.
- Three important things that I want to highlight:The retrieval of data from the preservation medium in the future is completely independent of any specific technology, hardware or softwareAll information needed to regenerate the data sometime in the future is contained on the storage medium itself, so the only thing that is needed is a light source, a magnifying glass, a digital camera and a computer (so the retrieval process can be easily automated some time in the future)On the Archivator you can store both digital data and human readable data, so a truly hybrid and redundant preservation solution
- Audio visual preservation has been very successfully “standardised” for more than 100 years.Now there is a proposal to standardise preservation of digital data on an open format on a medium that has the qualified longevity of 500 years
