3. WHAT IS CARNIVAL?
Carnival is a festive season which occurs
immediately before Lent; the main events
are usually during February.

Carnival typically involves a public
celebration or parade combining some
elements of a circus, mask and public
street party.

IT?
… they have handled objects and utensils
similar to those who are used in Carnival,
and remember the remote origin that
there can suppose the Bacchanalia, the
saturnales and the lupercales.
8. WHY DO WE CELEBRATE
IT?
The Bacchanalia were holidays in Baco's
honor, the saturnales to the God Saturn
and the lupercales to the Pan God. The
were born in the Former Greece and in the
Classic Rome.
9. HOW IS IT CELEBRATED?
In Cádiz carnival people dress up and they
participate in a parade with the best
groups in Falla´s theatre.
10. HOW IS IT CELEBRATED?
There are also
groups in the
streets because
they don´t pay
or the don’t
want to. These
days many
people go to
Cadiz to see the
groups.
11. WHEN DOES IT TAKE
PLACE?
Carnival takes place inmediatly before the
Christian Lent, with variable date
(between February and March).

CELEBRATE IT?
We always celebrate it in Cádiz
(Andalusia). Cadiz is near to Seville and
many people use to go there to celebrate it.
Some others celebrate it in their villages.
13. WHO PARTICIPATE IN
CARNIVAL?
Cadiz Carnival is celebrated by all the
people of Cadiz, that during this time dress
up and go out to sing or listen to musical
groups.
15. WHO PARTICIPATE IN
CARNIVAL?
The chirigotas are well-known witty and
satiric groups that train for the whole year
to sing about politics, topics in the news,
and everyday circumstances, while all of
the members wear identical costumes.

CARNIVAL?
The choirs are
larger groups that
travel through the
streets on open
flat-bed carts or
wagons, singing,
with a small
ensemble of guitars
and lutes.
17. WHO PARTICIPATE IN
CARNIVAL?
The comparsas, perhaps the oldest, and,
certainly, the most invariant carnival
representation in Cádiz throughout
history.
