Sleep Problems : Types and Causes
The very process of aging brings with it a series of sleep problems. Similarly,
the transition period between wakefulness and sleep or vice-versa also has its
share of abnormalities such as Parasomnias which are caused by a number of
reasons. These include: drastic and sudden changes in lifestyles or in
medication intake or even due to pathological imbalances that the patient may
be suffering from as he continues to age. Parasomnias, incidentally, are also
seen in children and include sleep walking, rapid eye movement disorder, a
particular psychosis where the victim enacts a dream in his sleep through
violent arm and leg movement.
Insomnia is the most common among slaapproblemen(sleep problems), where
the patient does not get enough sleep and the sleep-wake transition during the
sleeping period takes place all too often. The causes are: excessive smoking or
alcohol intake, anxiety, depression or post-surgical pain which may aggravate a
patient’s condition more if not detected and treated early.
The other more commonly seen sleep problems include: Sleep apnea,
Pickwickian Syndrome, narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, shift work sleep
disorder, primary restless leg syndrome, intrinsic and extrinsic sleep disorders,
psychophysiological sleep disorder, psycho-reactive insomnia and endogenous
and secondary insomnia, to name a few.
2. While abnormal behavior such as perpetual irritability and anxiety are
associated with all sleep problems, irregular overgang(transition) also occurs in
all cases of sleep disorders. A patient may be unable to stay awake during
daytime complaining of lethargy and sleepiness or may even have a sleep
rhythm problem wherein his sleep schedule varies on a daily basis. Irregular
transition in the sleep-wake period also gives rise to abnormal behavior when a
patient is sleeping such as jerky arm and leg movements made involuntarily.
Extensive research has shown that apart from aging, sleep problems occur
when a regular sleep-wake schedule can’t be maintained for physiological or
psychological reasons. This happens more often when you are traveling
between time zones and where the body clock is either moving in clockwise or
anticlockwise motion at rapid intervals, usually brought about by jetlag.
Similarly night shift workers also experience this troubled transition as they
have to forcibly work on the anti-body clock schedule.
Irregular transition and sleep disorders may be detected through a
polysomnography test wherein the exact disorder is detected and treated.
Nowadays sleep problems have become a super specialization in medicine and
sleep disorder clinics are being developed all over the world to treat the
malady. Since sleep-wake transition is an important factor in categorizing the
disorder, it is an object of separate study and is perhaps the basic standard of
determination of the disease. If left untreated, sleep problems may lead to a
plethora of psychological and physiological disorders and needs to be looked
into immediately as and when they occur.
Stress free life healthy life
The simplest way out to have a happy day is laugh all the way you go. It is just
a saying it did not mean actually to do so as it may make others seem you are
mad…..!! This just means that keep yourself stress free and happening
anywhere you are. At work place, with friends, with family, with your spouse,
your girlfriend/boyfriend, be even if when you’re alone. Be happy.
Get through getting enough work on a stressful day. Try completing it with
constant but small breaks, this will help you relieve a bit and also to finish it off
with getting over stressed at the end. Such measures are essential to stress
verminderen (reduce stress), as it directly affects your behavior and
eventually on your health be it mentally or physically. Try going to work or
before leaving home have some juicy fruits and pulses that keep you going
through at least till half of the day. Stress is however a part and parcel of ones
life, dealing with it is a great thing in all.
It does happen that due to various stress disorders nervous breakdown or
vapeurs (vapors) occur.
Wherein there are cases still unsolved where individuals jeopardize their life
3. because of stress disorders. Stress may sometimes lead to hypertension. This
is also an advanced situation that happens due to stress!!! Resulting into lose
of appetite; lose of interest in social life etc. Getting into the core of such
problems might get late by doctors as it is detectable nly by the patient
him/her self. He/she is the only person responsible for this. Breaking out is the
ultimatum result if once a person gets entrapped into the claws of stress.
Stress busters however are the best way out like listening light music, cracking
jokes at a while or two etc. Adapting them as a part of your daily routine along
with healthy food and clean environment can help you be away from
conditional risks.
Everything is relative in life
Everything in life is susceptible to change. Change is constant. If there is a
beginning there is an end too. That end is however not the end of everything
because it ushers in another beginning. Sometimes the effects of change are
minor so you don’t notice it or tend to overlook. This is because the pace of
change might have been slow. However at times the pace quickens and when
you come face to face with a major change it affects you. Change affects both
life and nature. overgang(Transition) in life therefore is a natural process.
Things become difficult when you are unable the face this fact called change.
Changes can bring in challenges which may make you feel vulnerable. This is
because till now you have been negotiating things that were familiar and
suddenly something unfamiliar comes up. When a loss stares at your face your
life turns upside down. That loss may be related to work, family member, place
etc but it affects you greatly.
The outcome is that you become afraid and uncomfortable. Your life gets
disrupted and with it your everyday activity. You start facing problems. These
can be stress, fear, anxiety, slaapproblemen(sleep problems) etc. This is
quite normal. If your loss is a significant one it is natural that you will react in
that way. Moreover it is the modern lifestyle that we lead today that compels
us to react in that way if there is any disruption in our life. However as said
earlier this does not mean the end of everything. If you take a change that has
happened in your life on a positive note then you will realize that something
new is about to begin in your life. Change gives you an opportunity to identify
your inherent strengths. It urges you to explore afresh. Wouldn’t you like to
experience a sense of renewal? Yes, you do.
It is true that the effect of a change can be dramatic on your life. You will be
sucked into a vortex of personal crisis. This is of course temporary if you start
thinking positively. Your life is taking a turn, a turn maybe for the better. It
may lead to growth and enlightenment. You cannot stop that so it is better to
accept that change. If you can develop that attitude then you are already on
your way to your destination. Learn to face your fears and anxieties. These will
fade away eventually. Do not succumb to drugs or alcohol for respite because
these will only make things difficult. With each positive stride that you take you
4. will experience better clarity of things.
Menopause and Maca
Human beings reproduce by giving birth to their young ones, the mode of
reproduction being sexual. After a sexual intercourse between the male and
the female, the male sperm fertilizes with the female ovum and this process is
called fertilization. After fertilization a zygote is formed and following a
gestation period of 9 months, a child is born. It is important for every woman
to understand how her reproductive system works. A basic knowledge of how
our body functions be it male or female is a must. In females, a normal
menstrual cycle is necessary for healthy reproductive system. The menstrual
cycle is controlled by endocrine system, a system of glands where each gland
secretes hormones necessary for the regulation of a healthy body. The
menstrual cycle is a process where physiological changes take place in the
body of a female.
In menstruation which is the most visible aspect of menstrual cycle, the uterus
lining or the endomaterial tissue is shed which when shed in a fluid form looks
like blood. Menstruation usually starts in a healthy female between 8 to 16 and
the first menstruation is called menarche. The end of menstruation called
menopause which normally happens in the age group of 45-65 signals that the
reproductive age of a woman has come to a full stop. Hot flashes, night
sweats, mood swings, anxiety, depression and weight gain are some of the
symptoms which might be experienced by a female when she is approaching
menopause. Menopause is indeed a phase of life when women tend to get
more irritable.
Many a times it is seen that this leads to arguments in households which might
take a bad turn. It is expected of every educated family to understand the
changes going in the female member of the household and try to keep a calm
head even when things do not appear to be easy.
One of the many ways to combat with these menopauze
klachten(menopause complaints) and life changes is the consumption of maca
powder. Lepedium Meyenii or Maca is a herb known for its medicinal property.
It is also consumed in the form of root vegetable. This plant indigenous to
Spain grows at an altitude of 41,00- 45,00 metres and was first named and
described by Gerhard Walpers in 1843. Since maca is known to help in
increasing libido, it is consumed by women worldwide as one of the symptoms
of menopause is lack of sexual desire as well. Maca is a legal drug in Norway
and one cannot buy it without prescription. When seen maca looks almost
similar to turnip and radish. Once maca is harvested it is left to dry for further
processing.
