Audience Research!
1. 'What are the most important aspects of
                 horror/thrillers?'

• Their responses were...
• - The build up of tension using the music
• - To keep me on the edge of my seat
• - Something that I will remember
• - Good music to set a right ambiance
I felt like this was correct with what people
expect in a horror/thriller film trailer.

• I liked the way that they said about the music as I think it is a very
important aspect of a horror/thriller trailer as I think it builds up the
tension in the trailer and makes the audience hang on the edge of their
seat and it will make them want to go and see it as they will think in their
mind that it is a good trailer and then the film will be good as well as it
wouldn’t make me want to go and watch the rest of the film.
• I also liked the way that they said that it should be ‘something that I will
remember’. This is a good point and we will hopefully achieve this as we
want people to remember it so they will want to go and watch the film.
• We want our film trailer, poster and magazine cover to be eye catching
and links with all of them together and so people will recognise them
  when they go out.
2. 'In a film trailer do you like...
- Getting straight to the point
- Dragging it out or
- Misleading’

 • Most of the responses were…
   - misleading so it is more unexpected but also
not having all of the action and the really
   important scenes in the trailer.
• I was quiet shocked to hear this as I thought
they would rather have it dragging out so the
action wouldn’t be all ‘in your face’ and so it
would have a mysterious feel to it.

• I will however note down these points and make the trailer
  misleading like the trailer of ‘Chernobyl Diaries’ has done;
they have made it so the start of the trailer is a feel good
trailer so people are interested straight away and then it gets
more scary as the trailer goes on. I like this idea of misleading
the audience and I think I will incorporate this into the film
  trailer.
3. ‘How long would you expect a horror/thriller trailer
                      to last?’

• The focus groups responses were…
 Either
 1 – 2 minutes
 Or
 2 – 3 minutes
Not 1 – 3 minutes.
• Either 1 – 2 minutes or 2 – 3 minutes is a good length of time for a
trailer as you don’t want the trailer to be dragging out over 4
minutes long but you need to have it long enough so that people
know what it is that your advertising.

• Some films have different lengths of trailers; they have a longer one
which they show when the film trailer has just been released and
then as time goes on more to the release date they produce a
shorter one because people know what the film is about when it is
nearer the release date and will only want to see the most
important detail of the film as they will want to go and see it even
  more.

• I think if we make a trailer that is 1 – 2 minutes then this will give us
the right amount of time to show all of the right information and it
will grab the attention of the viewers and it wont bore them as it
  wont be too long.
4. ‘Does the colour of the text on the magazine
         cover and the poster matter?’

               • Yes it does
• My focus group said that colour does matter
when making our poster and magazine cover.
If it is not bright and bold and if it doesn’t tie
in with the images then people wont notice it,
they wont want to look at it and wont bother
finding out what it is that were advertising.
Summary

• We will be using these points that my focus
group have said to me as they are good points
and will improve our film trailer, poster and
magazine cover and they will make our target
audience want to watch and look at them.
