Shaft (1971)
Settings
It starts in a busy city centre, most probably New York as
its filled with tall buildings and busy roads/streets.
The roads are crammed with cars and yellow taxi’s also
suggesting it being set somewhere in the United
States. The camera follows through the city clearly
showing all of the subways and Broadway showcases –
also another representation of New York.
Narrative
To start there is no clear narrative or genre, however as
the up beat music starts, it becomes clear it is not a
horror or even comedy, neither a depressing drama or
happy rom-com. The genre appears to be
detective, this is also can be recognised from the front
cover of the DVD – where he is holding a
gun in a snidey manor and also an
 action scene in the background.
The music and body language from
the main character suggests it will
 be a detective genre.
Characters
There are a lot of people around in the scene but only
one main character which is focused on in the opening scene.
No other people really look into the camera other than him,
which he rarely does within the opening scene as he seems as
though he is on a mission and trying to get somewhere. He is
wearing a long leather coat with a turtle
neck jumper and also has an old
fashioned typical affro style hair
cut which suggests the movie is
not set within the last 30/40 years.
