In recent years, the British Journal of Haematology published an article coauthored by Dr. Fatih Uckun entitled "Gene Expression Profiles of Infant
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and Its Prognostically Distinct Subsets." The
work compares the gene expressions of infant-derived leukemic cells and those
from children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Through careful
analysis, the researchers found unprecedented evidence that distinct
pathognomonic transcriptomes prevail over the infant's biology as opposed to
children with ALL.

Infant ALL gives off genetic signatures characterized by overexpression of
certain mitogenic as well as anti-apoptotic genes (apoptosis is preprogrammed
cell death), a collection of which have been shown in association with the early
reappearance of ALL. The study further demonstrates that cells from infants
with ALL express higher levels of cytokine genes , which in turn mediate
biological effects by way of the JAK-STAT transduction pathway.

Overall, the findings indicate that JAK3 represents a potential molecular target
for interfering with harmful, anti-apoptotic signaling pathways present in infant
ALL.
