Presentation for the Information Literacy Advisory Group of Oregon conference, 2015 in Hood River, OR A discussion about Culture and Information Literacy. By Culture, I mean Colonialism and also the dominant Culture in the US and it's filtration of information. As a student of color, it is near impossible to get a non-mediated version of information that is not tainted with White-Supremacy's cultural values. This topic is rarely discussed and has huge implications for Students of Color, for the dominant culture as well as education in general.

Information and knowledge are decisive in human development. Since the industrial revolution, information architecture designed on the principles of industrial economy has been predominant in the functioning of the society. The technological advances in Internet and Telecommunications within the society aided the shift from industrial economy to a services based economy are creating a foundation for a new order of information and knowledge access, control and transfer. The implications on the functioning of the governments, corporations and society notwithstanding, remains uncertain if these forces will lead to strengthening the order of information feudalism or would they create conditions for decentralization and diffusion of information resources creating a new order of social production and exchange at the core of the economy rather than the periphery . We examine the implications of these structural changes on the governments, private corporations and society in the context of emerging economies.

The history of new media helps us understand why it is so ideologically powerful today. These lecture slides are from my Masters unit, Future Media Platforms, taught at Bournemouth University.

The various movements based on digital openness – free software, open content, open data, open science, open government etc. – have made huge strides in recent years, and transformed many aspects of the modern world dramatically. But that is just the beginning. The key drivers of openness – the shift from analogue to digital, and global connectivity – imply much more: digital abundance. And that, in its turn, requires us to re-examine ancient intellectual monopolies born of analogue scarcity.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
