Think Aloud
What
This strategy is typically paired with the Read Aloud where the teacher thinks out loud to
model how to comprehend a passage.
Why
Reading is an invisible process. Thinking aloud for students demonstrates what goes on in
the brain while comprehending text.
How
Before reading, identify the points that you want to Think Aloud (hint: write your Think
Aloud ideas on sticky notes and flag sections of the book). As you read the passage, stop
and Think Aloud about the passage. Do not interact with the students during the Think
Aloud time. Different Think Aloud ideas include modeling the following:
• Remembering what you’ve read
• Making predictions
• Making connections to other text, yourself, or the world
