Bio Oil is essentially used against scarring; to reduce the appearance of scarred tissue. It is also used to reduce
the formation of striae – those ugly red lines that appear due to sudden and rapid stretching of skin which

The natural plant oils and vitamins found in Bio Oil are:
Calendula Oil – From family of plants such as the Field Marigold (Calendula arvensis) has been proven to

Lavender Oil – This is from the Lavender Flower and has been proven to have anti-inflammatory and skin

Rosemary Oil – From the herb Rosmarinus officinalis has a number of antioxidants compounds including
carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid. Carsonic acid is a potent antioxidant (prevents damage to tissues from

strong antioxidant with antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory effects in the body including the skin;
Chamomile Oil – Derived from family of daisy-like plants called Chamomile and proven to have

Vitamin A – Available in the form of Retinyl Palmitate in Bio Oil, it is converted first to Retinol once
absorbed through the skin and ultimately to Retinoic Acid which is the active form in the body. Vitamin A is

Vitamin E – Formulated as Tocopheryl Acetate in Bio Oil, it is converted to the active form of Vitamin
E, Tocopherol, once it gets through the skin providing essential antioxidant properties to the skin cells

Bio Oil – The Oil Base
The oil base in Bio Oil is composed of the following constituents which are not therapeutic in themselves but help
the active ingredients in the mixture to distribute over and get through the skin where it is required:
Paraffinium Liquidum – More commonly known as Mineral Oil. This is derived from crude oil ‘cracking’

process i.e. when crude oil is broken down into it’s constituent parts. It is widely used in cosmetic
products;
Triisononanoin, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Isopropyl Myristate and Glycine Soja Oil are members of the
ester group of chemical compounds. These esters add properties such as viscosity, emollience and help
with absorption of the active ingredients in to the skin from the mixture.
Bio Oil – The Fragrance
These compounds give Bio Oil the fragrance it has:
Amyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Coumarin (also has anti-inflammatory
properties), Eugenol, Farnesol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene
Carboxaldehyde, Limonene and Linalool.
Bio Oil – The Colour
The following compounds are specifically added to give it a colour:
Orange: CI 26100 (Red 17), Pink: CI 26100 (Red 17) and CI 60725 (Violet 2).
One important claim by the manufacturer that Bio Oil contains “the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™” was
not confirmed in the list of ingredients given on their website. It doesn’t mean it’s not included, just that it is not
listed.
