SUSTAINABLE SURFACINGS INSPIRED
BY NATURE
To design roads and paths using renewable materials that protect the environment, Eurovia has
developed a new process: the Sequoia® plant-based binder.
This plant-based binder replaces conventional
bitumen and can therefore be adapted to a wide
range of decorative and qualitative applications.
Surfacings of this type can improve the safety
and aesthetics of a variety of structures as well as
enhance user comfort by making shared spaces
easier to distinguish and recognise.

The plant-based binder is part of Eurovia’s ongoing
endeavour to achieve its sustainable development
objectives by offering an effective alternative to the
usual petroleum-based products, while providing
surfacings that blend naturally into our environment.

PERFORMANCE
Sequoia® plant-based binder is colourless, so that
it is possible to make the most of the aggregates
with which it is used to create surfacings that blend
perfectly into every setting, from city-centre squares
to forest bicycle paths.
Sequoia® plant-based binder is made of renewable,
primarily non-food plant-based resources. It is
produced in a special factory and delivered to mixing
plants ready-to-use.
The Sequoia® binder can also be used in Eurovia
asphaltic concretes and in cold techniques (surface
dressings and microsurfacings). Coating temperature
can be reduced, in line with the Group’s environmental
policy, to cut greenhouse gas emissions and generate
energy savings. Plant-based binders are recyclable.
PUTTING COLOUR
in our life!
Translucent when applied as a thin
film, plant-based binder brings out the
natural colours of aggregates.
Where required, the addition of
selected pigments can provide a
wide range of colours, giving the
binder many quality of life and safety
applications, in both urban and rural
areas:

4. Naturally
effective
flexible
utilisation
durable
adhesion
The studies that resulted in the formulation of
the Sequoia® plant-based binder were carried
out with the goal of replacing petroleum-derived
bitumen in all light pavement applications.
The plant-based binder has very good adhesion
properties when combined with a large number
of aggregates, ensuring durable surfacing
properties.
In parallel, constituents were selected to ensure
that the binder could be emulsified and used in
microsurfacings and surface dressings.
The origin of the aggregates, their colour and
grading, the grade of plant-based binder and
the mix formula are defined in accordance
with the loadings to which the surfacing will be
subjected.
Sequoia® is a registered trademark.

This binder will no doubt prove to be a
widespread alternative going forward.
