This new issue of the Poverty in Focus magazine presents 12 articles that discuss the main policy issues for a new inclusive and sustainable development paradigm. As a contribution to the dialogue around Rio+20 and to the ongoing discussions around a post-2015 MDG Agenda, this Poverty in Focus links future development to sustainability and particularly to social sustainability. Looking beyond the critical issues of ‘carbon footprints’, ‘low-carbon development’,’ green economy’ and the economics behind saving the planet, it draws attention back to the continuing challenge of ensuring that growth and development deliver for the poor and vulnerable. Malawi’s narrow economic base makes the country highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of environment and natural resources degradation, climate change and extreme weather events. This paper highlights why the poverty-environment nexus and the sustainable management of natural resources is instrumental for Malawi’s poverty reduction and other development goals. The paper draws on findings from the 2011 the Government of Malawi and the UNDP–UNEP Poverty Environment Initiative (PEI), economic analysis of sustainable natural resource use in Malawi and lessons learned from the implementation of the PEI. Primary data and analysis of available secondary information on soil erosion, forestry, fisheries and wildlife, the study provides compelling evidence that unsustainable natural resource management has a negative impact on economic performance and poverty reduction. Key findings from the study include, that unsustainable natural resource use cost the country 5.3% of GDP annually reducing rates of economic growth and that if the problem of soil erosion was addressed and lost agriculture yields were recovered, 1.88 million people could be lifted out of poverty between 2005 and 2015. However, achieving sustainable natural resource use is a challenge requiring innovative policy and institutional reforms, the integration of pro-poor natural resource objectives in sector policies and budget frameworks with assured budget allocations, as well as enhanced Government’s capacity and willingness for cross-sector coordination.

Green growth can be seen as a way to pursue economic growth and development, while preventing environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable natural resource use. For the short term, green growth can transform the opportunity of the crisis to ensure a more sustainable economic recovery. For the long term, it will promote new, greener sources of growth. The OECD is working on policy recommendations to help governments achieve greener growth. The presentation gives an overview of the findings to date and the next steps. It mentions innovation, taxes, jobs and development issues, as well as how to measure progress towards greener growth.

A LEDS is a country-led and country-specific national strategic analysis and planning process covering all economic sectors for promoting economic growth while reducing long-term GHG emission trajectories. At a practical level, a LEDS is the strategic framework, based on sound analytical foundations, that articulates concrete actions, policies, programs, and implementation plans to promote economic growth over the long term in a way that lowers a country's GHG emissions from what they would be if the country carried on with business as usual. LEDS are voluntary and non-binding. Because each country has unique national circumstances and priorities, each country develops and drives its own LEDS strategy

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
