I’m EG, Information Literacy Librarian here at the UCLA College Library, & this is Alicia Reiley, our hardworking Reference Assistant It is my pleasure to begin by introducing Gary E. Strong, University Librarian at UCLA and Kenley Neufeld, Library Director at SBCC Gary has very kindly offered to say a few words of welcome to start off… [TURN OVER TO GARY]
- Now for our agenda for today… Kenley Neufeld, Library Director at Santa Barbara City College, has graciously agreed to speak with us about building a social library Kenley will be speaking for about an hour During the 2d hour, I’ll be talking about the UCLA Library web site, library hours, new and updated information resources you can share with your students and instructors… AND UCLA CL & library cards and policies for APHS students, community college TAP students & for yourselves at the end of the workshop, I’ll tell you a bit about the LILi Group, Lifelong Information Literacy, & our blog & calendar I hope you’ll end up with some updated information to help your students And, I hope you’ll help me improve this session for next time by filling out an evaluation form QUESTIONS WELCOME!
- Ok, now before I introduce Kenley, I’d like to know HOW MANY of you CAME TO last year’s workshop, Wikipedia, YouTube & Information Literacy? In case you don’t know, the PPT show & outline for that workshop is up on Slideshare.net This year both Kenley and will be mounting our slide shows on Slideshare.net too. This year’s workshop is called Building a Social Library… & we’re experimenting with an online option for those who couldn’t come in person We’re using Dimdim It allows you to host an online meeting for free for up to 20 people—so, welcome to those attending online, too!!
- So, why are we focusing on building a social library? What’s in it for you and for you, your students and instructors? It’s now my pleasure to introduce you to Kenley Neufeld, Library Director at Santa Barbara City College who’s going to address those very questions in what I’m sure will be a fascinating hour on this topic Kenley…

In the next segment we’ll talk about new shortened UCLA Library hours, We’ll go to the UCLA College Library web site, go over some new & updated free and licensed research resources After that I’ll talk quickly about the UCLA Libraries & borrowing privileges & procedures. Then we’ll end with a 1-2 minute description of the LILi group, and I’ll ask you fill out an online evaluation form before you leave.
- 1 st , as some of you may already know, the UCLA Library home page is our portal to our print and online library materials, to UCLA libraries, to librarians, & to all kinds of help. Home Page Main categories SEARCH & FIND SERVICES LIBRARIES & COLLECTIONS ABOUT NEWS, EVENTS, EXHIBITS What’s new?
- Today, in contrast to past practice, due to budget issues, the only handout we’re giving you is a UCLA library map It’s a very important handout, though, because it has the UCLA libraries’ hours on the back As far as we know right now, those hours will be shorter beginning on Thursday when classes start Most UCLA libraries will be closed on Saturdays and open only 1-6 pm on Sundays That is, unless something changes. Also, currently there are study groups in place to look into the impact of closing the Arts and Chemistry libraries Both will remain open for this year Music Library hours will be different from other libraries—check the back of the map for details BE SURE TO TELL STUDENTS & INSTRUCTORS TO CHECK WEB SITE FOR LIBRARY HOURS—MAY BE CHANGES—show the site http://www.library.ucla.edu/about/hours.cfm
- Now, as you may already know, UCLA ’ s library catalog is freely available to anyone with an Internet connectio HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE TRIED IT? Lists books, periodical subs & other materials in all 13 UCLA libraries, but does *not* list individual articles PDF usage guide tells you how to use the Catalog — feel free to distribute that url to students & instructors And tell them, that here ’ s an example of why Google isn ’ t enough … Google doesn ’ t list the 8 million volumes owned by the UCLA Library
- Now, HAS ANYONE USED THE MELVYL CATALOG? NEXT GEN MELVYL pilot is a catalog for all UC campuses AND… search box – UC & OCLC project, still under development & is very likely to replace the MELVYL Catalog SHOW SEARCH AND FIND MENU/NEXT GEN… Search for “SOCIAL LIBRARIES” (41)… In contrast to what we’re used to in library catalogs, search results include SOME articles, along with books WHICH PERIODICALS DO THEY INDEX? Not clear from the Help—probably just those in the OCLC dbs we subscribe to… QUESTIONS?
- Onto something new… UCLA Library has licensed LibGuide software allows librarians to create and update these guides fairly easily All are freely available… LibGuides: http://guides.library.ucla.edu/index For instructors: http://guides.library.ucla.edu/teachingtips QUESTIONS?
- Ok, now as you know, many institutions subscribe to or license online databases of all kinds, both periodical indexes & reference databases, & it can get very confusing, as we license many hundreds of databases with many different interfaces Anyone visiting UCLA is considered part of the UCLA community, so may use our licensed resources for free while in the libraries.
