1. According to Kotler, Social marketing can be considered ‘sale of an idea, an attitude, or behavior.’ It focuses on what people want and need, as opposed to convincing them to buy something unnecessary.
2. And according to Wikipedia, Non-profits are organizations that use all of their proceeds to further help realize their goals, as opposed to distributing them to shareholders.
3. Non Profits use social marketing to help them steer clear of simply giving handouts to those in need, and instead enabling change from within.
4. In times of disaster a social marketing solution would be to send professionals to the area in need and train individuals on disaster preparedness, as opposed to simply sending needed supplies
5. When dealing with disease, a traditional solution would be to provide funding to buy mosquito nets or antibiotics, while a social marketing angle would be to train the citizens of high risk disease areas about the benefits of using nets and antibiotics.
6. Instead of spending money on developing campaigns to bring awareness of the illiteracy rate of a country, a social marketing solution would be to recruit and train volunteers to help tutor students and foster their desire to read.
7. and when dealing with homelessness, a social marketing campaign is a program which helps to achieve self sufficiency by way of job training, as opposed to simply donating food, clothes, and a place to sleep.

9. Walk outside this building and within 20 yards you’re bound to see someone, sitting idly looking for a handout while contributing nothing to society at this point in time.
10. I often see these people and wonder, ‘at what point did your life take that wrong turn’. Does he want a way out? It’s clear that he gets handouts, because he’s here every day doing the same thing.
11. And what is being done by Non Profits these days in order to alleviate the pain and suffering that some people are subjected to on a daily basis?
12. Groups like Glide and the Saint Anthony Foundation take the traditional approach and give out food, medical care, beds, and clothing among many other things to thousand of people each day….no questions asked.
13. But where does this person end up the next day, back on the street, and probably back in that line, getting a free meal to hold him over for the next few hours.
14. However, there are non-profits using social marketing to enable individuals to get themselves out of their current situation and not rely on others for survival.
15. Farestart, for example, is a seattle-based organization specializing in training homeless individuals in the culinary arts
16. Over the last 19 years, they have provided the resources for roughly 5,000 people to transform their lives and become gainfully employed, while at the same time serving almost 5 million meals for those in need.
17. They’re essentially doing what Glide and Saint Anthony Foundation are doing here in SF, but they’re killing two birds with one stone.
18. By training these individuals to improve their current situation, Farestart is creating changemakers that can move the masses that sit idly on the street corners waiting for someone’s token of generosity.
19. Social Marketing can be viral. These newly trained baristas and cooks will be a sign of hope. Living proof that everyone has a chance to succeed.
20. Social marketing is a tool to to be used amongst non profits so ensure that change happens. So situations like this do not solidify one’s future.
