                                 Lesson 4: Nouns and Their Jobs

               Nouns are found in many different places within a sentence. 
                              They have three main jobs.
             
            1. Nouns as SUBJECTS:
            Subject tells who or what the sentence is about. 

            Find the subjects in the following sentences: 

                The Aztec Empire was located in the area now known as Mexico. 


                Tenochtitian was the capital of the Aztec Empire. 


                Invaders entered Tenochtitian in 1519.

            2. Nouns as Complements

            *Complement is a word that completes the meaning of a verb. When a 
            noun is a complement it may be a predicate noun, direct object, or 
            indirect object.

            Predicate Noun: renames or defines the subject after a linking verb

                The Aztecs were fierce warriors .

            Direct Object: names the receiver of the action of the verb

                Spanish soldiers defeated the Aztec Empire in 1521.
             
            Indirect Object
                          : tells to whom or what or for whom or what an action 
            is done

                The Aztecs gave the Spanish gold and other precious goods.

           3. Nouns as Objects of Prepositions

           An object of a preposition is the noun or pronoun that follows the 
           preposition. Nouns often appear in sentences as objects of 
           prepositions. 

           Commonly Used Prepositions
           about    against    along             among       around               as
           above    at         before            behind      below          beneath
           across   beside     between           beyond      by                   off
           after    despite    down              during      except           for
           from     in         inside            intro       like                 near    
           of       on         out               over        past           through 
           to       toward     under             until       up                   with 
           within   without

                Identify each underlined noun as a Subject (S), Complement (C), or 
                                   Object of a Preposition (OP)

            1. The Inca lived in the Andes Mountains in South America. 



            2. Cuzco was their capital. 



            3. The Inca were excellent  ecord keepers.

            4. They invented the  uipu to keep track of their  oods.

                    5. The quipu was a long cord with many strings. 



                    6. Clerks tied knots in the strings in different patterns. 



                    7. The Inca also built excellent roads. 



                    8. Their system of roads carried runners across deep gorges.

Lesson 4.notebook September 21, 2012 Lesson 4: Nouns and Their Jobs Nouns are found in many different places within a sentence.  They have three main jobs.   1. Nouns as SUBJECTS: Subject tells who or what the sentence is about.  Find the subjects in the following sentences:  The Aztec Empire was located in the area now known as Mexico.  Tenochtitian was the capital of the Aztec Empire.  Invaders entered Tenochtitian in 1519.  2

Lesson 4.notebook September 21, 2012 2. Nouns as Complements *Complement is a word that completes the meaning of a verb. When a  noun is a complement it may be a predicate noun, direct object, or  indirect object. Predicate Noun: renames or defines the subject after a linking verb The Aztecs were fierce warriors . Direct Object: names the receiver of the action of the verb Spanish soldiers defeated the Aztec Empire in 1521.   Indirect Object : tells to whom or what or for whom or what an action  is done The Aztecs gave the Spanish gold and other precious goods.  3
